New user - looking to buy drives - Is the Seagate 1.5TB drive safe?

Hi,

I read a number of reports of failures on Newegg.com about the seagate 1.5TB drive.  I was initally planning on getting two 1TB drives (probably WD greens - I have one 3 months old & I figured another one from newegg, then put them into the 323.

I would like the 1.5TB for the sheer size of it.  I would not run raid 1, but I would run a backup nightly to go from one drive to the other.

Could anyone offer a suggestion, I see the new firmware (for the 323) works for the 1.5tb.

The new newegg drives are coming with CC1J firmware on it.

BTW, I have a super slow NAS MyBookWorld 1TB that is horrendously slow & a faster 250GB WD netcenter (faster than the MBW).  I am loooking forward to something fast (the 323).

Thanks,
Rich

I'm running the 1.5TB drives with the CC1H firmware with no problems. FYI, both the CC1H and CC1J firmwares are the latest version, just for different part numbers.

I can confirm the previous post also. I've been pretty happy with the seagate 1.5TB drives. Got two now for two weeks. No clicks or other noises. Loaded both up to 75% and working great. Be sure to upgrade the firmware of the drives AND the DNS323 before using them.

DNS 323 (Hardware B1, Firmware 1.06). 2x 1.5TB Seagate HDs.
Chroot Debain (Lenny) on USB (not reloaded). Edna server. USB print server. USB drives added to samba share. All init.d scripts in place.
Future projects: FFP reloaded then chroot on B1 hardware.
