DNS323 streaming to Xbox 360

Hi there,

yesterday I got a very cheap Xbox 360 (arcade).

I just want to check in what the currently considered to be the best way of streaming from the DNS to the 360.

Twonky 4.x ?
Twonky 5.x (not officially offered for DNS afaik)
UPNP on DNS (is fw 1.05 enough, or is 1.06 required) ?

Or can the Xbox access a samba share directly?

Cheers,

Emacs

Re: DNS323 streaming to Xbox 360

Well i installed 1.06 and the upnp server doesn't work at all. Can't be seen by WMP11 even. I think some other people have the same issue reading the 1.06 release thread

I used the ushare upnp for awhile but found it abit tricky with music/ pics and movies.

So i tried twonky
I installed 4.4.9 and then I then found v4.4.9 was not longer nas supported and you can't buy a key for it sad

But then i found hope in the twonky forums yesterday

Here is the link to the newly release 4.4.11 software. came out friday i believe.
NAS Versions
These versions are provided as an unsupported version of TwonkyMedia as is.
They can be activated with a TwonkyMedia server (version 4 and 5) or TwonkyMedia manager license key.

http://www.twonkyforum.com/unsupported/ … 090108.zip

now on there it says a lic can be bought but i've not tried it yet. So anyone that has bought a lic and tried it on 4.4.11 let me know smile

Install was very easy, setup easy via the web (http://<your_nas_ip>:9000/config)

Hey!! Thanks!! I didn't notice that a new twonky version was released. I'll try it right now!

Unfortunately, there's no way to buy a 4.x license, if you check the twonky forums there's some hints on how you can buy and use a 5.x license on 4.x, but it's not well-tested, not supported, and if it fails, you're on your own. I also don't like to pay a 5.x license fee when I'll get an *unsupported* 4.x version while the rest of the world is getting latest version (5.x) and support for the same price (I discussed this on antoher thread here).

However, you shouldn't care about the trial ending date. You can reset it to 30 days, you just have to reboot your server. Or if you don't want to reboot the box, just do a "touch /bin/.tv" to update the access and modification times of that file to the current time (it's used to control when the trial period began).

Not so legal/ethic, but until there's not a better approach from the twonky developpers, I'll not buy it (either support 5.x or make the 4.x unsupported license price cheaper and available for purchase and I'll buy a license).

UPnP with 1.06 works for me. However I like Twonky 4.4.9 better as UPnP server was way too slow for my large library of picture.

Twonky 4.x
Works fine -
Streams everything a XBOX can play, WMV, WMA, MP3 and MPEG2 ..

but ultimately the whole inability of Xbox to play MP4 and MKV became too much and I forked out for a TVIX Player.

Re: DNS323 streaming to Xbox 360

Thanks a lot guys.

In the end I upgraded to 1.06 firmware and my Xbox and DNS happen to see each other just fine. Streaming works good so far (tested just a few files).

Re: DNS323 streaming to Xbox 360

Hi,
I was playing a file from the DNS to an XBOX and it was blocky video but it played.
I played the file on my pc and it is fine.
Codec issue maybe?
Any ideas how to fix it??

Re: DNS323 streaming to Xbox 360

Looks good on mine. Regular Xvid encoded files. Standard resolution (no hi-def). Switched ethernet 100Mbit connectivity between DNS and XBOX.

You could copy your file to an USB stick, plug it into the back of Xbox and play it from there to check the quality of the file itself.
