Shut off the DNS, remove drive, put in USB enclosure, copy in ubuntu?

Hi,

Can I shut off the DNS, pull the drive out, put it in a SATA USB enclosure, copy the data I need locally, then put it back into the DNS & turn it on as if nothing ever happened, or will that result in a reformat?

Is the format standard ext?  Or is this something special?

I have some data I need to move quicker than its moving.

THanks,
Rich

If the DNS-323 disks are standard or RAID1 volumes, yes - you can also use Windows XP and the ext2ifs file system driver.  The file system is ext2.

What?  Is this a new thing?  I just have a single drive in it right now.  I never knew you could use ext2 in XP.  I didnt think XP could see it.

I had no idea that existed.  This is great!

I guess to be safe, since I only want to move data from the DNS drive to the XP machine, I should do read only?  This is amazing!

Well I tried the driver.  I was a bit afraid to turn off the "read only" for the data transfer.  I thought that XP might have done something to the drive.  Unfortunately all my data is read only which doesnt work either.

Is it safe to make the drive "non" read only with the driver?

Thanks,
Rich

I wouldn't claim to know a whole lot about the ext2ifs driver and I've never used the read only and non read only, I didn't even know they were there - so I can't answer your question, I just know that it lets me read my ext2 (& ext3) disks in Windows XP.

I've never tried writing - actually I may have once a long time ago, but I don't usually write and I think writing to an ext3 drive can cause problems because of the journalling.
