Folder size question: Why do they differ?
Folder size of the same folder copied to the NAS and on to my PC are very different. Should I worry? Has anyone noticed this? Is there a fix?
DNS-323, f/w 1.06, 2x 750GB mirrored, setup fresh after a reset to default settings and a fresh format of the NAS. Folder viewed through an iMac OS 10.5 (fully updated).
Here is a screen capture to illustrate the differences:
EDIT: even the number of items in the foldrs was different.... now they show as identical?!?!?!?!

wow that's strange.
telnet/ssh into your dns323 and issue: du -hs /path/to/folder
This will give you the size of folder from command prompt. See if it matches one of the sizes from you mac. I am curious as to what is going on too. My brain is fried atm, but after seeing what the du command presents, I investigate further. I enjoy looking into strange things like this, as I always end up learning alot concerning the stated issue.

I may be wrong but this could be an explanation:
Fact: Both folders show almost the same size in bytes:
19,688,432,622 bytes on mac
19,688,438,770 bytes on dns
This would not worry me, because you have 13,925 files, so the difference is 0.44 bytes per file
19,688,432,622 bytes translate to 18,34 GB. Des NAS Folder shows 18.37 GB, so this is ok also.
So one question remains: Why shows your mac 19,688,432,622 bytes as 32 GB???
Possible solution (i can quess only because a have null mac knowhow)
- Your mac's calculation of 32 GB is broken (i dont think so, but who knows)
- You have many very small files (lets say 10 bytes per file) occupying a whole block (lets say 8k) on your disk, so storing 19,688,432,622 bytes on your mac does really take 32 GB of disk space on your mac.
To be on the save side, pick some random files on your DNS and try to open them. If they open correctly, i would not worry. You could also do a complete byte-per-byte file compare on both folders, but I do not know how to to this on a mac.
