Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.

Problems with Basic Telnet Access

I'm a DNS 323 (and Linux) newbie and could use some help enabling basic telnet access.

I'm reluctant to install the entire Fonz fun_plug because it contains lots of things I don't really need (at least not yet).  Plus, I'm using this as a Linux learning experience.  So I'm trying to get my feet wet by first enabling telnet using the instructions under "Create the fun_plug" on the following Wiki page: http://dns323.kood.org/howto:telnet.

However, this does not work for me.  If I log the output, I receive the following error messages...

/mnt/HD_a2/lnx_bin/busybox3 1: Syntax error: word unexpected (expecting ")")
/mnt/HD_a2/lnx_bin/busybox3 1: Syntax error: word unexpected (expecting ")")
/mnt/HD_a2/lnx_bin/busybox3 1: Syntax error: word unexpected (expecting ")")
/mnt/HD_a2/lnx_bin/busybox3 1: Syntax error: word unexpected (expecting ")")
rm: cannot remove `/mnt/HD_a2/lnx_bin/sh': No such file or directory
Illegal instruction

This appears to be the result of the mknod commands in starttelnet.sh that read like this:
/mnt/HD_a2/lnx_bin/busybox3 mknod /dev/ptyp0 c 2 0
/mnt/HD_a2/lnx_bin/busybox3 chmod 0666 /dev/ptyp0
/mnt/HD_a2/lnx_bin/busybox3 mknod /dev/ttyp0 c 3 0
/mnt/HD_a2/lnx_bin/busybox3 chmod 0666 /dev/ttyp0

Since I don't understand what the mknod command is doing (in particular the meaning of the major and minor node numbers), I thought I'd appeal for some help.

Any suggestions?

Best regards,

Gurney

Re: Problems with Basic Telnet Access

Hmmm,

Download the file, utelnet-kit.tar.gz, unrar the file on your tube.  Use winscp and copy the two files and folder over.  Changed the properties so all can read/execute the two files and the folder.  Restart your dns323.  Use putty to access the dns323.  That should be it.  When I have issues like this, I usually delete the things I added and start from scratch.

Re: Problems with Basic Telnet Access

Thanks, alowin.

It seems that my problems were/are related to file owner/permission issues.  When I use Windows (SMB) to copy the files over to the DNS-323, the user is 'nobody' in the group '501' and that works.  (I still don't understand why I'm not prompted for a user ID and password when using Windows.  But that is left for another day.)

When I use Filezilla, the owner is the FTP id I created and used to log in to the FTP server.  Even though this ID, it's Group, and Public have full permissions on the files, Telnet will not run.  Strange.

Best regards,

Gurney

Re: Problems with Basic Telnet Access

I really suggest you use fun_plug. It is very easy to install, and it uses only a tiny bit of disk space.

While there might be applications included that you do not need, no one forces you to use them. The default setup only activates telnet. After that it's completely up to you what you want to add to the device.
fun_plug includes ssh, which is important for security reasons.
Also, fun_plug is being actively developed, and most people that compile additonal programs for the DNS-323 provide only funplug packages.
