Apologies if this topic has been addressed before - my searches has failed to find related posts.
My DNS-323 is 18 months old and running in a RAID-1 configuration. Its existing 2 x 300GB drives are reaching full capacity so I am looking to upgrade (replace) these with larger capacity (2 x 1TB drives). Assuming I want to continue using a RAID-1 configuration, I am considering the following approach
1. Remove both drives and replace with two new 1TB drives, format and deploy using RAID-1 config
2. Put one of the original disks into a USB caddy, attach to my PC and copy back to the NAS.
Is there a better approach ? Copying 300GB over the network will take a while.
I had also considered attaching the usb-caddy to the NAS to reduce the copy time but presumably this would circumvent the RAID-1 mirroring.
Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks Paul

Yours is probably the easiest and safest way to do so.

I just did an upgrade.
I plugged in one of the new 1tb disks. Formatted it and set it up for single disk.
removed the disk from nas, connected it to my computer + one original disk. all via SATA/ESATA
copied content from old to new. (much faster than via network)
Installed the new disk with content + the second blank 1tb disk.
Set up for RAID1 and let the NAS take care of the rest(syncing content)..
worked like a charm.. no data lost and probably the fastest way I can think of.

May I enquire what level of firmware are you running ? My unit is at 1.05 and given some of the feedback with 1.06 regarding drives not spinning down - I am loathed to upgrade unless absolutely necessary or any bugs in 1.06 are resolved.
Any thoughts ? Thanks Paul

I'm running FW 1.06 because I want to use the torrent client. To say the least, BT client in 1.05 is a mess. Cannot delete/move downloaded files and settings wont save etc.
FW 1.06 is a bugfix and I highly recommend it over 1.05.
With my WD disks I do not experience the spin down issues that I have read about.
