I just setup my dns-323 with two samsung drives, 1tb each.
I chose the RAID 1 option, with a 500gb raid1 drive.
So does this mean hard drive 1 will have 500gb and 500gb of mirrored data on hard drive 2?
so the rest is jbod from hd1 and hd2?
Right now I have volume1 500gb, and volume2 with 1tb.
I just want to make sure before I put important information on it.
Now, for my macbook I saw the drives automatically.
For my windows7 box I saw just a shortcut to the Dlink admin page in my network section. I had to use the software on the cd to setup shortcuts.
So my question is, do I have to run the cd for all my window PCs?
Thanks, these are my questions for now.

Yes you are correct, 500GB of each HDD are used for Raid1 and the remaining 500GB on each drive is formed into JBOD(Volume_2).
You are not required to use the Easy Search Utility to map the drives on your Windows machine. You can simply open My Computer > Map Network Drive > type in \\ip\Volume_1\ or \\ip\Volume_2\ and map a drive letter. If you have user authentication enabled for the volumes make sure you choose, "Connect using a different username" and type in the appropriate username and password.

my next issue. I tested itunes server on a folder with one album and it worked. I tested it on my 18gb folder and it doesn't even show up.
Anybody know why? Also when I refresh the 18gb folder it gets stuck on 94%

ok seems some of my albums are becoming corrupt after being transferred onto the dns-323.
I dont know what is causing this.

Ok thanks.
But if I'm transferring stuff over to Volume1(raid1) shouldnt both HD leds be blinking? I only see one blink, so I am afraid it is not mirrored.

Yes - both should blink.

only one of my drives blinks. im transfering over to volume1 (raid1)degraded and no blinking.

If you have a raid status of degraded, you have no protection and you need to get it resolved.
Offline
what does degraded mean?
like I mentioned above I set a raid 1 volume of 500gb even though I have a total of 2tb.
I thought that is what degraded meant.
Ok im just going to reformat completely.
I did a 1.04 to 1.06 firmware upgrade without formatting, so this may be an issue.
Thanks

I just want to reformat.

I haven't actually booted my system up yet to start with but most RAID configs will have to restart a rebuild if you reboot the system. I would assume it's the same here, and probably isn't automatic either. That would give you the chance to skip rebuild and just reformat.
HOWEVER if it is rebuilding it may be a good idea to just let it finish. There's a chance it could fix your problem. Though from past experience it would probably just happen again later.

I had this kind of problem with the built in iTunes server. In my case it seemed to be because I was using Apple Lossless audio files which are pretty big, and the built in iTunes server couldn't cope. It scans the whole file, not just the headers.
Look into installing Firefly, that works much better, and can be set to do a quick scan of your files. On my collection the built in iTunes server took 6 hours to scan. Firefly takes about 1 minute.
By the way I tried raising it with DLink, they weren't interested.
