FTP/permissions/Changing Unix owner from Nobody

I have a D-Link dns-323 NAS, twonky installed, telnet enabled. I've been trying to get FTP working but i have this issue. I have no issues accessing the drive's contents when local. I'm able to connect to the drive via FTP but i cannot access the particular folders that hold the goodies i want to access. i get the error message:
Response: 550 Can't change directory to *name of folder*: Permission denied
Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing

i don't remember exactly what i read over the past year, but i've had the idea for a long while now that i need to change the owner of the particular files/folders from "Unix user/Nobody" and/or change the permissons for those folders and their contents. Going into the properties menu and attempting to change the permissions does nothing.

Help would be appriciated.

chown and chmod are bewildering to me.  i am an utter n00b to linux.
