Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.

I want to extend the HDD size of my DNS323, without any big effort. I need all the data of the currently used hard discs.
* is there a step by step introduction (or even possibility) to change first one harddrive, rebuild to the bigger one and then replace the other old harddrive and rebuild? or do I have to install the old harddrive in a PC using a linux OS and copy manually?
* I have not yet updated my firmware (GER). the new HDDs are 1 TB each. firmware update required?

If you swapped the drives one-by-one, letting the array rebuild each time, you'd end up with an array of exactly the same size and a lot of wasted space, so you're going to have to ...
1) remove the existing drives.
2) install the new ones, and create the RAID array.
3) transfer the data.
As to the firmware update - it's hard to tell if you need to upgrade, when you don't tell us what the current firmware is. Not everone may agree with me, but I would say upgrade to the latest firmware - I have had no problems with it.
Two comments ...
- you can use a Windows system with the ext2ifs file system driver if you don't have a linux system on hand.
- something about that "I need all the data of the currently used hard discs" suggests that you don't have it backed up - RAID1 is NOT a form or backup.

The best way I found is to follow fordem's advice on setting up the new ones, but then use ffp and a USB enclosure directly to the DNS for the old data. You can then copy it directly from the USB enclosure to the new array. This does, however require some amount of know-how.

@fordem: When I copy data from one harddrive to another, then I think this is a backup. When this is done automatically by RAID, this is fine. Thus, I don't really understand where the difference between RAID and backup should be?
I have installed a debian sarge linux as described on the wiki, which is activated by the fun_plug by a chroot. will the system still work after the copying procedure?
Thanks for the answers!

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - it is used to minimize down time caused by a disk failure. It provides NO protection from data which may have been deleted (whether accidental or deliberate), corrupted by a virus, hardware glitch, etc., etc., etc.,

Dang. So I am doing research because I'm looking to do this exact thing with my DNS-323 500GB RAID1 array. I was worried about this exact issue - if I bring it down, plug in a new 1TB (or larger) drive, and bring it back up - the new drive gets formatted to an array of 500GB.
So - just to confirm (because I really didn't want to have to do it) - I'll need 500GB of storage separate from my DNS-323 to copy all that existing data over - then plug in two brand new larger drives, let them format, and copy it all back over?
I guess it's not so bad, but I was hoping to avoid that double copying exercise.

You MAY be able to get away from the double copy exercise, as well as the need to have 500GB of seperate storage - here's how ...
Either one of the drives removed from the DNS-323 can be connected to a PC running Windows XP and the ext2ifs installable file system driver and you should be able to access the data and copy it over to the DNS-323 - OR - as BQ041 has suggested above, if you have fun_plug installed, you can mount one of the old drives in a USB-SATA enclosure and connect to the USB port on the DNS-323 and then copy directly to the new array.

Thanks! I'll be looking to get new drives soon and when I do the swap I think I'll try your first suggestion.

i am in similar situation now. Upgrading my 500gb RAID1 hdds to 1TB RAID1. Currently running firmware 1.06 with funplug 0.5.
I would like to know if I could retain all my funplug stuffs without redoing them. Just copy relevant folders? What folders?
While I am at it, I will also upgrade the firmware to 1.09b01. Funplug should still work, right?
Please advices, thanks.
