Unable to print from Mac ... but ok from XP

Hi There,

I've connected a Canon iP4500 to the DNS-323...

I've added the printer on OS X: smb://nas/Ip

But whenever I try to print, I get the following error:

Tree connect failed (NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME)

Do you have any idea what is going on here?  Is this a problem on the OS X side or on the dns-323 side?

Any insight would be much appreciated.

dino

ps: I am able to print successfully from an XP box.

Re: Unable to print from Mac ... but ok from XP

have you tried adding the printer from printer system preferences?
the way i added my printer served by the dns323 was to add it in printer prefs, found under the windows tab, workgroup (default workgroup on the dns323)
, dlink, lp.
i then choose what drivers to use, i have gutenprint to drive my xerox, a free download, and it prints fine, and i have never been able to use it before on a network, so i am pleased.

Thanks for the tip nicco...

That's exactly what I did.  I added the printer via preferences (under the windows tab) with url:  smb://nas/lp.  For the driver, I chose "Canon iP4500" from the dropdown.

Still not printing from OS X

What is you connection url (eg: mine is smb://nas/lp)?

dino

ps: maybe I'll try to print with gutenprint

Re: Unable to print from Mac ... but ok from XP

i didnt have to enter any url or address, it all happened for me.  clicked the windows tap, the workgroup that the dns is on appeared on the left (called 'workgroup' in my case), i clicked on that, the dns appears in the next column, click on that and the printer 'lp' appeared in the next column.  click on that and it asked for a driver, and i had to select a driver to use from the gutenprint list

Oh.... man - I misunderstood you.  Sorry.  I clicked on "Advanced" and picked "Windows" from the dropdown because when I clicked on "Windows" the screen was empty.

I have a feeling that I have a deeper problem... If you saw all that info then it means that my mac is not seeing the workgroup ... yet, when I do control-K to connect, I am able to connect.

Any thoughts?

i dont know if you are sorted yet...
in the 'setup' menu for the dlink, under the 'device' heading, i have a named workgroup 'workgroup'.  this appears in the printer prefs in the windows heading.  i am running 10.5.6

Hi nicco,

I'm also running 10.5.6 and I can now see the printer through the "Windows" tab ... stupid thing was that I had to enable "Airport".  Once that was done, I could see Workgroup > NAS > lp ... so I added it.  I noticed that the connecting url is: smb://nas:139/lp (I was missing the 139).

Neverthless... when I try to print, I now get the following error:

Error Number : 311 Printer is in use or an error has occurred. If an error has occurred, eliminate the cause of the error.

Most useless message ever... I mean: "If an error has occurred, eliminate the cause of the error"...  wtf?

Anyhow, the only difference between my setup and yours is that you're using "gutenprint" and I'm using Canon iP4500 (the driver for my printer).  I'll switch the driver... maybe that's the culprit???

Any thoughts?

Thanks again for the help.

Re: Unable to print from Mac ... but ok from XP

OK - IT WORKED!  OMG...  what a mess

Here's what I did:

1. Installed Gutenprint 5.2.3 (thanks go to nicco for pointing me in the right direction)
2. Turned on "AirPort" (why? I don't know - somehow if I'm connected to the router via ethernet I cannot see the nas without command-k'ing it ... with it on, I can see the nas ... anybody have an answer??)
3. Added the printer by clicking on windows tab (alternatively, you can add the printer by clicking on advanced and entering the following url: smb://nas:139/lp (Picked the Gutenprint 5.2.3 Cannon driver)
4. Printed page

Now... (more of a mac question but) why do I need to have AirPort turned on in order to see the NAS?  I'm already connected to the router via ethernet?  I find this very bizarre.

My setup:

NAS ==> (Modem+Router) <== OS 10.5 (ethernet && airport)
NOTE: with ethernet only, I must connect to NAS using command-k... with airport enabled everything auto-connects

Am I missing something here?

Re: Unable to print from Mac ... but ok from XP

... question answered ...

The reason why I needed AirPort and Ethernet is because I discovered that my Router assigned a public IP to my ethernet and a private one to the AirPort connection.  So, since samba is configured to accept jobs only from the private network, I was unable to access the printer from my ethernet connection... good... but what a PAIN to figure out.

Thank you all ... hope this thread helps someone out there.
