speed problem with linux

I have Windows XP and Linux on the same machine, on two different drives. When I access the DNS-323 using Windows everything works fine and the unit seems to be very fast and reliable. Under Ubuntu 7.04, copying files from the DNS-323 to the PC seem ok but copying from the PC to the DNS-323 is horribly slow and the process often ends with a “Error "I/O error" while copying...” message.
I figured it was a samba configuration issue on the Ubuntnu machine and I tried to change several parameters (TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_LOWDELAY SO_SNDBUF=8192 SO_RCVBUF=8192) in the smb.conf file but to no avail.
The ethernet adapter is a Realtek RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit,
Can anybody help? I don't really know what to do to make teh dns-323 usable..
thank you
