Apologies if this is a FAQ. I have read the Known Issues sticky, but still haven't resolved the issue.
WinXP SP2. Have just purchased a DNS-323 and two Western Digital 1.0TB drives. Connected DNS to network and updated firmware to 1.06. Installed drives and formatted as RAID1. All good so far.
BUT, using the Easy Search Utility 4.4.0.0, I cannot map the drive (Volume_1) to any available drive letter. Every attempt results in 'Can't map drive.' message.
After reading the Known Issues sticky, I found I could see and map the drive in Windows Explorer using the IP address, eg. \\192.168.0.100\Volume_1, but NOT using the device name, eg. \\DNS323\Volume_1.
So question is, how can I map the drive using the device name, and how can I have it automatically mapped each time the computer starts?

In Windows XP - right click MyNetworkPlaces and select Map Drive from the resulting menu, either enter the UNC for the drive you wish to map or navigate your way it, check the "reconnect at logon box and click OK.
The reason you cannot find the device by name is probably due to the fact that you have no DNS (domain naming system) server on your network to resolve the name to it's ip address - most of us don't - in the absence of a DNS server, Windows uses something known as a master browse list which is notoriously unreliable in a pure Windows network, and more so if other OS's (the DNS-323 runs linux) are involved - if you wish you can add a static entry to your computers hosts file to get around this, personally I would just map the drive by the ip address, it's not as if you need to remember to do it on a daily basis.

In Map Network Drive, while I can enter the UNC (using IP or name [after placing in hosts file]) and successfully map the share, I am unable to browse to the DNS; it never shows up even though it is (I believe) in the correct workgroup?
However, Reconnect at logon seems to be hit and miss. An older Win98SE box always connects to my main box (XP SP2) when the main box is running, or when the main box is not running, asks if I want to connect next time. However, another XP SP2 box fails to reconnect to the main box more often than not?
I wonder whether using NET USE to establish the shares at startup would work any better than Reconnect at logon? What does the /PERSISTENT option do; is it like Reconnect at logon?

You're welcom - you could try NET USE, I've not used it with the DNS-323, just never needed to - mine always shows up in MyNetworkPlaces - and yes the /persistent switch is essentially the same thing as the reconnect at logon.

Thanks. NET USE does work here for the DNS-323, either using IP, or using name (after installing in hosts file).
But the device never shows up in My Network Places (can't browse to it--never appears in the workgroup). Should I be concerned about that?

Try adding it using "Add a network place" and see what happens.
