Backup to external usb drive

Hello all,

So I've been using my DNS-323 in RAID 1 for a few months now and quite enjoy it smile

But I've decided that it's time to start doing regular backups of it as I should of been doing at the start (I am starting to use it to store photos on it so if it crashes, it would be a very sad day) (Oh and when a regular backup solution seems to be working well, the RAID 1 will probably be changed to just seperate disks in the long run).

I have at my disposal a usb external HD and have seen a few ways on this forum to plug it into the dns-323. I am wondering what your optimal backup solutions are and what you think of them. One option to me I see would be to adapt the Volume_1 to Volume_2 instructions to replace the backup volume with the usb drive and use rsync and snapshots everynight (is there a way to not create a snapshot that night if nothing has changed on the drive?) or plug the usb drive into a computer, find some backup software and do the backup over the network.

1st solution would be much quicker I guess and everything would be automatic.
2nd solution requires manual activation of the backups (as the computer would be a laptop and would not have the drive plugged in all the time) but has the advantage of having the usb drive and dns not physically connected and on different power circuits/surge protectors.

If I go the directly plugged into the dns solution, any way to find out what the most recent file and instructions are for enabling the usb port are? there seems to be a few floating around. Any other suggestions for backups beside rsync? any completely different suggestions for backups?

thanks!
