Hello
I have a DNS323 with 2 x WD 500gb in Raid1, and it works fine. However, I find it's kind of slow and moreover, I'm still concerned with the safety of my data
I'm building another NAS with FreeNAS and a "cheap" new PC...
I was thinking about the following:
1) Reconfigure my DNS 323 in JBOD or Raid0 (I'll have 1Tb) I've read somewhere on Internet that JBOD and Raid0 had the same performance....
2) Backup every day (let say at 11:00 PM) the whole DNS 323 to FreeNAS with RSync
Is it feasible, and how?
Thanks

Anyone?
I was also thinking at using the Backup from A to B drive and thus not using the Raid function of the DNS 323 (should be faster), and also use Rsync and FreeNAS to make an additional backup from A to the FreeNAS (which could use the Raid 1 function, software or hardware)
How can I do that?
Thanks

have you looked over here:

great explanation in setting up and scheduling backups

What exactly are your concerns? There are different data preservation
strategies for different concerns.

Hello
I'm always afraid of loosing all my files (mainly digital pictures)
This is why I bought the DNS 323, with 2 x 500Gb HD in Raid 1
But I've read somewhere that software Raid 1 is not 100% safe, and I saw the A to B backup method on the DNS 323. Like this, I'll have my 2 disc as "standard" which is supposed to be faster than Raid
And I was also thinking about making a copy of disc A onto a FreeNAS server......that could be a standard disk or 2 discs in Raid1 (software or hardware)
Does it sound crazy (too much belt and wistle)?
Thanks

You mean 'Belts and Braces' OR 'Bells and Whistles'?
Of all the things, photos are my main concern as well. You are still not removing the danger of loosing all the data due to theft or fire etc - if someone breaks in and steals your NAS and the other NAS built with freeNAS then you have still lost everything. If you house burns down both of the NAS's will be destroyed along with the data.
Consider off-site backup of your most precious data either through a HDD with this data stored on (perhaps kept at your place of work) or one of the online data back up solutions. I recommend Amazon S3. I access S3 using a product called Jungle Disk - it is very good.

what are the monthly fees for their service?

Loosing your files from what? You need to identify your failure conditions to
successfully implement your data preservation technique.
Off site backup protects you data from theft, fire (as Lambretta suggested).
Snapshot backup to tape/HDD protect against accidental deletion or virus attack.
RAID1 only keeps you data available in the event of a single hard drive failure.
There are a lot of good data preservation strategies for various failure contidtions,
there is no one 'best' strategy, because there are different requirements (as costs)
to be considered.

Yes, you are right...
Actually, I tried to build a NAS with FreeNAS may be 1 year ago. I bought the cheapest mobo and a cheap CPU (AMD Sempron LE-1100). But it was not working at this time because of some ACPI issue. Then I bought the DNS 323, and I'm pretty happy with it
But I thought that it was slow, or at least FreeNAS could be faster. Then I tried again last week with the new release of FreeNAS, and it's working!!! I can schedule shutdown at night, and use the RTC to wake up the server in the morning...
So I have now the DNS 323 and a FreeNAS server.
My DNS has 2 x 500Gb WD green HD in Raid 1.
1) I've read that Raid 1 could slow down the data flow. Using the 2 disk in Standard should be faster
2) I've read as well it could be failing, and the A to B backup could be a solution
3) And I thought I could use the freeNAS as well to make 1 additional backup
But I've made some test, and I don't see big difference between the DNS in Raid 1 and FreeNAS with 1 disk. It takes ~40 sec to transfer a 500Mb file to my local hard drive to the DNS 323, and approx the same time to the FreeNAS
So at the end, I probably don't need to have this FreeNAS server (unless the set up is not optimized....?)
By the way, is there any possibilty to schedule sutdown on the DNS 323 with ffp, and use the RTC to wake it up?
Thanks

S3 only charge you for data storage and bandwidth (up and down) but it is crazy cheap. USD0.15 (ie 15cents) per TB storage (per month) and USD0.10 (10 cents) per GB data in, 17 cents GB data out. http://aws.amazon.com/s3/#pricing
Jungle Disk (the app that provides the mechanism to access S3 storage) costs USD20 when I bought it for life. The only issue is with Jungle Disk there is no binary for the ARM processor - yet. Given this you would need to have you local PC run Jungle Disk to conduct the backup. Jungle disk has a CLI interface as well as a GUI.
