Server died - reformat ext3 drives?

I had a Ubuntu server with an ATA primary drive and 2 320GB seagate SATA drives for data. The SATA drives are using ext3.

The motherboard went out and I am thinking of replacing the server with a DNS 323. Will I need to reformat the drives to work with the DNS or can I drop them in and retain my data?

Re: Server died - reformat ext3 drives?

You'll need to reformat - your drives are unlikely to have the required partition structure that the DNS-323 uses, and ext3 is also not supported.

Re: Server died - reformat ext3 drives?

i think ext3 is supported in firmware 1.06
you can choose when you format your disk between ext2 and ext3
i did it yesterday on my dns 323:)

Re: Server died - reformat ext3 drives?

The change lists are available here

Firmware: 1.06
Date: 12/29/08

Feature Additions:
1. Supports 1.5 TB Hard Drives.
2. USB port supports UPS monitoring.
3. Add option to Manually or Automatically Rebuild Raid.
4. UPnP AV supports Microsoft XBoX 360, Sony PlayStation 3.
5. Support FTP over SSL/TLS.
6. Add Unicode support to FTP Server.
7. Email Alerts supports Gmail.

Function Changes:
1. Turn off Fan at low system temperature.
2. Disable UPnP AV Server and iTunes Server by default.
3. Remove static DNS from the DDNS server provider list.
4. Remove the DDNS Timeout setting from GUI, and change the Status design. fixed timeout timer as 576 hours.
5. Remove the Auto Refresh Timer option for UPnP AV and iTunes Server, instantly Auto Refresh by default.
6. More user friendly Time Settings GUI design.

Bug fixes:
1. Fix BT downloaded files sometimes are unable to be deleted.
2. UPnP AV support large file (over 4GB).
3. Fix 1st HDD unable to sleep.
4. Fix HDD cannot hibernate if UPnP AV or iTunes Server is enabled.
5. Time stamp of files are incorrect when DST is enabled.

Support for ext3 was removed in 1.02b, as you can see there is no mention of it being "re-added" in 1.06 or any prior update.

I'm running 1.06 and after the upgrade I spent many hours formatting and reformatting to determine how the new "auto rebuild" feature works and I was never presented with a choice of file system type.

The choices are RAID configuration (Standard Volumes, RAID0, RAID1, JBOD) - if you chose RAID you get to choose the size of the RAID volume - and if you choose RAID1 you get to choose auto or manual rebuild.

If you chose ext3 on a DNS-323 yesterday, you're either runing firmware prior to 1.02b or hacked firmware.

Re: Server died - reformat ext3 drives?

That is the old manual, the 1.0 edition - dating back to 2006, there is a newer 1.3 edition - released in 2008, both are available on D-Link's support web page.

Like I said previously, there was an option for ext3, it has been removed, I'm not doubting that you saw it, but - if you did, you're probably using an old (very old) version of the firmware.
