Speed up rsync for internal HD transfers?

Hello friends ,
I just bought a 1.5TB seagate to add to my DNS 323 , already with 1TB sg hd . Everything is setup and working. Now i need to move some files from the internal (#1 1TB) to the new (#2 1.5TB ) HD.

I tried rsync (initially) using

Code:

rsync -avuW --progress -stats -delete /mnt/HD_a2/VMimgs /mnt/HD_b2/vm/

The images are each 5-20 GBs size .However the rsync speed is terribly slow sad

Code:

8866219320 100% 4.58MB/s 0:30:44 (xfer#2, to-check=358/1313)

Any tips , howto increase the internal transfer speed?

Do a 'cp -a' first ,then do an rsync..
