cannot mount share in ubuntu

I'm running Ubuntu 8.10 and I'm having trouble mounting a share too my dns-323.  When I type in my password I get this error "Unable to mount location Failed to mount Windows share".  Using the same user and pass in windows i have no problem.  Please help.

Re: cannot mount share in ubuntu

Papaloewe,
I followed the instructions at the link you posted.
I added theses lines to smb.conf then ran testparm
lanman auth = yes
client ntlmv2 auth = no

but I'm still unable to connect to shares that require a password.

Re: cannot mount share in ubuntu

FYI: it seems to be an issue with Ubuntu 8.10.

I installed Ubuntu 8.4 and it works fine now.  I hope there will soon be a fix for 8.10

Re: cannot mount share in ubuntu

This is a known problem with Ubuntu 8.10.  I can vouch that it also effects other Distro's that use Gnome - my hybird Debian Etch/Lenny/Sid laptop is experiencing this.  I've also seen reports at other distro's for the same problem as well.

Ubuntu's current bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/207072

Like you, I hope it gets fixed.

Presently I'm using workaround #3 in the third last posting:

Workaround #3) As noted in earlier posts, if you put smb:/"numerical ip address" in the nautilus browser window, it will work instantly, but don't make a mistake because an unresolvable ip address may cause a hang.

Re: cannot mount share in ubuntu

In the same boat myself, just upgraded the wife's computer and installed 8.10 (was 7.10) now it will not mount my DNS-323 shares. Let's hope they get a fix out before she find out smile
(tried Mint 5 r1 same problem)

Re: cannot mount share in ubuntu

Quick update: I found a simple fix for the "Unable to mount location Failed to mount Windows share" error I was getting trying to mount my DNS-323 shares using nautilus:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p= … ostcount=5

(now if only I could get XMMS/audacious to play MP3s from the share)

Re: cannot mount share in ubuntu

I've had a string of problems with samba shares on my DNS-323, since I upgraded from Ubuntu  Gutsy (7.10), which worked just fine. Firstly there was the gvfs issue over samba shares with passwords -referred to by nukedathlonman, details here:

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=524485

I installed the 8.10 update containing the gvfs patch.

After this, I still couldn't connect to my DNS-323.

I then found the fix for the lanmanager authorisation, referred to by ChuckMcB. I can now mount, browse and access files on my DNS-323.

However, I'm left with a residual problem in that I can't resave files to folders on the DNS-323. In addition, if I drag a file to a folder, the modification date is changed to the date and time that the file was copied over and it loses it's original modification date. In addition, rsync complains with the following message: "failed to set times on 'directory_name': Not a directory (20)"

Any ideas on what is going on here?

Re: cannot mount share in ubuntu

Holy, when did this forum change?  I haven't been on in a long time...

@ itcave and others:

I recently started using linux dual boot with XP.  Right now I am on LinuxMint6 running the KDE CE version.  It is based off ubuntu 8.10.  After many hours wasted, and troubles with getting access to my DNS323 I finally am able to access and save to it.  I hope this helps you to.

This post helped me a lot.  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=288534

I could see the share(s)...but I couldn't save or edit files.  Only after making an fstab entry, all was good.

The problem I have now is that my DNS323 will wake up without me accessing it.  I have tried numerous linux distros, and Mint/Ubuntu is the only one that has given me this problem.  For example, in open office or gimp when opening a file in my Desktop folder it will wake up.  WTF is doing this???  I have it mounted in a folder named /mnt/
