Does Firmware 1.03 iTunes Server work?

I just purchased a DNS-323 and for the life of me I cannot get the iTunes server to work.

I bought this with 2 Samsung HD501LJ 500 GB disk drives.  I configured it as a RAID 1 drive and installed the latest firmware, version 1.03.  I copied my iTunes Music folder to a shared folder on the DNS-323.  (All the songs are from my CD's, i.e. not from iTunes Store).  Using the DNS-323 web-based configuration application, I set the iTunes server to "on" and set the folder to the iTunes Music folder.  I also set the password.  The changes were saved successfully to the DNS-323.

In iTunes (version 7.1.1.5) on my laptop, the DNS-323 appears under "Shared".  I clicked on it and it prompted me for the password.  Now I can click on it and all the songs are listed.  However the songs will not play.  Selecting them and choosing play does nothing.  No error message; no nothing.

As it happens I have another PC on the same subnet that has iTunes on it.  I went to that PC and the DNS-323 appears under "Shared" there too.  However, just like on my laptop, the songs will not play.

That PC has some songs on it.  So I configured iTunes on that PC to be "Shared".  Then that iTunes share showed up in iTunes on my laptop.  Those songs DO play.   So I don't think the problem is an antivirus, switch, firewall, or router issue.  (In any case, I DID try disabling my antivirus and firewall software and sure enough that doesn't effect it.)

My laptop has a mapped drive to the DNS-323.  Using Windows Explorer, I can access the song files and play the songs in iTunes.  It's the iTunes server that doesn't seem to work.  Has anyone here successfully used the iTunes server with firmware 1.03 in a RAID 1 environment?  Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

-Scott

Re: Does Firmware 1.03 iTunes Server work?

Yes, i have the iTunes server running in the same configuration (RAID1, FW1.03) and it works great. The previous firmware had severe problem with the import of songs to the iTunes server, but this issue seems to be solved in FW1.03.
Maybe first try with just a couple of files (not hundreds or thousands!) on the server and choose files which you are sure of that they´re not corrupt any way (use mp3test to test them). And don't forget to click on "REFRESH" in boxes´ web-gui, otherwise it may take days until the iTunes-Server has refreshed its directory on its own.

Thanks, Minor.  The source of the problem has been revealed.  It's the file format.  I re-ripped a test song to MP3 outside of iTunes and voila the server works.

Re: Does Firmware 1.03 iTunes Server work?

I'm having the same problem. The songs show up and play on on either of my PC's (they show up but if you try to play it just hangs...when you skip to the next song the previous one gets the ! label as if it can't find the file). All are MP3's. Any other ideas? I'm going to run the MP3test software to see if my filenames have anything to do with it...although I think probably not since it works on my other pc?

Re: Does Firmware 1.03 iTunes Server work?

The problem that I was having was definitely related to the file format.  I converted the iTunes m4a format to MP3 using Easy CD-DA Extractor and the files then played.  I couldn't find any D-Link-published information regarding the supported file types for the iTunes server on the DNS-323.  Anyone know where to find that information?

Best regards,

Gurney
