Has anyone been installing software to the NAS instead of your C drive

Has anyone been installing software to the NAS instead of your C drive?
I realize that NAS is by definition network storage but is it worth installing apps to my Z:\Program Files\ (NAS box) instead of C:\Program Files\  ????

Re: Has anyone been installing software to the NAS instead of your C drive

I guess it depends on what you are trying to do?  Are you trying to put 'Program Files' on your
NAS to centralize this data for easy backup?  Or, are you trying to share your Z:\Program Files
(on NAS) between to computers at the same time? As a first gut response, I don't think this
is real good idea.

First, there is the disk access speed to consider.  Your local disk will be 3 to 4 times faster than
the DNS-323.  So, you program will load slower and could operate slower, depending on that
particular program's need to access files in (NAS stored) 'Program Files'.

Second, I really not sure that all the files for a particular application's installation are confined to
just the 'Program Files' directory.  Many applications place file in C:\windows and
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data.   So, your (NAS stored) 'Program Files'
might not be a complete enough representation of that application to just share it between computers.

However, you could always, just give it a try, and see if you think this technique is 'worth it' for you.
If is does not work out, you can always just uninstall from the NAS and install the app locally.
