Raid volume synchronising

Hi

I've recently acquired a DNS-323 with 2 x 1.5TB Seagate barracuda HDDs. Installation went fine including firmware upgrade. I then foolishly decided to see whether RAID was working by removing one HDD and switching on, then switching off and on again with second HDD back in place.

The system asked me whether I wanted to rebuild Raid since one volume was degraded so I did but now synchronising is taking forever. "The RAID volume is synchronizing now. Please wait for 262.0 minute(s)." is displayed in the GUI and the time sporadically goes up or down by some minutes, this for the last 3 hours already. Both HDD leds are blinking on the machine. There's about 300MB of test data on the system.

Will this eventually sort itself out or should I be worried? I've already tried rebooting, powering down and restoring factory defaults, all to no avail. Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Raid volume synchronising

I'd say your data is probably screwed at this point ... but, if you'd left it on it's own it probably would have resynched.

I've done simulations, pretty much like you have, albeit with smaller drives, and it has resynched successfully every time - one thing to note, the time to resync seems to be dictated by the size of the drive, not the amount of data, and it is affected by any usage of the unit - the unit can be used whilst resynching, but this will cause the resynch to take longer.

Re: Raid volume synchronising

Thanks for the response. Not that bothered about the data as it was only a test copy of a couple of hundred megs. So if I give it enough time it will eventually straighten itself out?

Is there an easy way to reformat both drives and set up RAID again? From the gui?

Re: Raid volume synchronising

In my experience, yes, if left to it's own devices it should resynch - the "time remaining" is an estimate and will change based on what is happening at any given time.  This, by the way, is how RAID generally works - it's not specific to the DNS-323.

You can reformat from the admin menu - go tools, raid and then set the RAID type you need.
