Why would you bother? 

Cons:
Notebook drives are smaller (500 gigs is the highest affordable ones) and the cost per gig is much higher.  I just bought 2 WD Green 1 Tb drives for $99 CDN each.
You would probably have to run cables from the connectors at the back of the slot to the smaller drive (Awkward!!)
There are no mounting screws required when you use a standard HDD, so you'd either have to let them float or customize (screw holes) the case

Pros:
Umm I'll leave that to you, other then "I have them sitting around" and if that is the case hook them up in USB portable cases and use ffp and script to connect them to the back of the DNS-323

I'm aware of the adapters, and I already have some. However, they aren't designed for hot plug solutions, therefore, they don't take into consideration the exact placement of the connectors on the back of the drive when it comes to mating.

I'm interested in the power saving and noise reduction when using notebook hard drives or SSDs.

I've since found out that Thecus is going to release a NAS for notebook hard drives. The N0204 miniNAS is supposed to come out at the end of this month. I'll wait to see what that is capable of.
