Dual Seagate 1.5 TB in Raid 0... overheating issues...

First, I'm a noob.  2nd I don't have a ton of time.  I've read a few posts, and the kids are crying!  I know someone here knows how dial in my DNS-323 so the hard drives stay cool... They are happiest when they're at about 36C.  At 42C they start to do weird things, and at 52C they pretty much refuse to service.  Right now I have the front cover off with a Thermaltake USB fan (pretty tight!) to get all the data I need copied over...  I don't want to brick my unit so please someone help... smile

Setup:
DNS-323 firmware 1.6
Dual Seagate 1.5 TB in R-0
NO other modifications, or software installed

Me:
I know some unix/linux commands and understand some permissions.  I use Filezilla and putty. smile

Re: Dual Seagate 1.5 TB in Raid 0... overheating issues...

I have 4x 1.5TB in RAID 5 in my DNS-343 and the unit reports 43-48C degrees depending on the workload. I don't experience any issues with them.

What is the firmware on those Seagate drives? It will be on the sticker which is on the drives.
There is another thread here talking about it.

Also you might want to run SeaTools on the drives as well, of course this means you will have to pull the drives out and plug them into another machine. Therefore backup all your data first.

The 1.5TB drives are known to have issues in RAID, not sure if it's RAID 0 though.

Most of the time the issue appears when you are streaming video or something from the drives and it will stutter.

Re: Dual Seagate 1.5 TB in Raid 0... overheating issues...

Okay, I think there is something else wrong with these drives.  Now that I've had them cooled down, it appears that the temp has no effect on their performance at all... They're studdering and pausing for long periods of time on MP3's!!! No good.

They're ST31500341AS-RK's with CC1H firmware.  What's the dealio!?

I opened a email dialog with Seagate support... we'll see what happens.

CC1H firmware is the new version, therefore your drives shouldn't be affected by the bug.

I would back up your data and run Seatools on the drives and see if that finds any bugs.
