hi,
i have a d-link dslG624T router connected with my DNS 323
i am able to see the drive, i can put data on it and i
created users on the dns with write / read permission
i tried to connect myself pretending i am one of the users through
ftp://username@ip-adres DNS
and i am able to see the maps i allowed to be seen.
but when the user is trying to get acces from his pc on another location with the above address
he can't get in. Isn't even able to typ in the pasword.
i did portforwarding on the ip adres of the DNS. port 21
however when ik run it with pfportchecker is says the port is closed. But then again, it seems testing
the port on the ip adress of my router. So not on the DNS ip adress. So maybe that is normal.
pLZ can anyone help me out here?
i have the drive over a week and still am not able to get it properly running.
A desperate user.

It is possible that the firewall at the user end - if he is behind a NAT firewall/router - can prevent the connection, have someone test it using a dial up connection (or PM me the details and I test from here).

ok, i'll have him turn off his firewall and retry. See if that 'll do the trick! I'll be back!!!

It's probably going to take a little more than "turning off his firewall".
I'm not talking about a software firewall here - I was very specific when I said behind a NAT firewall/router. If he is using a NAT firewall/router, as most people do nowadays to share a broadband internet connection, that NAT firewall/router needs to know how to deal with an incoming ftp data connection, some of them don't, and quite frankly, if they don't then disabling the firewall won't change anything - which is why I suggested trying it from a dial up connection.

ok,
i don't understand what you are saying, but how does it work?
with the dialing up connection?
how can he try that out? he gets his internet through cable, directly into his pc. so not really a modem/router.
(ps thx 4 trying to help out here)

Does he get a public ip address on the PC?
One that does not start with 192.168, 172.16 or 10.?
Offline
i ll ask him,
but i have had contact with the technical support from telenet (internetprovider) ,
and they told me its possible that the firewall blocks port 21.
i have to mail to the online support to ask them how to open the port.
so i ll be back and thanx again.

another question,
ik open port 21 in my modem/router for the ip adress of my router.
ik check it with pfportchecker and it is open.
the next day when i check again, its closed....?
any idea?
does this have anything to do with the problem?

here is his ip:

his port 21 is closed. so maybe he has to open that one first with
portforwarding?

He has a public ip so things should be good on his end, it is possible that a software firewall may need to be configured to allow the ftp client to function.
Lets take a look now at port forwarding and open ports.
He will not show port 21 as open because he is not running an ftp server - so there will be nothing at that port to respond to a request.
Now your port 21 that is not always showing as open. There are two aspects to this - first the router needs to forward the port to the DNS-323 and second the DNS-323 must be available and listening at that address and port.
I assume you have the DNS-323 at a static ip address and have forwarded port 21 to that address - if the address changes, or the DNS-323 (or it's ftp server) are off, the port will show as closed.

i shall explain the things i have done, cause i think it easier for u to understand.
i open the website of my router and have access to make changes.
i opened a virtual server and then made a rule to open port 21. then saved.
when i then open ftportchecker it gives me the ip adress op the ROUTER
and says its open. see image 1.
the ip adress off the DNS DRIVE is 192.168.1.3.
this i got on the screen when i installed it and mapped a drive (Z) .
maybe important. The dns automatically shuts off after 10 minutes.
when i shutdown the computer and restart later, ftportchecker says the gate is closed. and the rule
is gone in the right screen under "applied rules". Its only in the section "available rules".
when i then put it in the "applied rules" section and save, the port is open again.
I hope the pictures help.
But all what i did above, is portforwarding port 21 in the ip adress of the Router. Maybe it should be
in teh dns drive ip??? but ftportchecker only show the ip of the router.

ok
seems i have 3 ip adresses
router : 192.168.1.2 static
dns 313 : 192.168.1.3
external ip : 83.101.61.207 i get to see this one on www.whatismyip.com
due to forum help we got further, but not quite there, =-)
i forwarded port 21 in my router for the dns ip .....1.3
the user tried accessing the maps on the dns through the following address:
ftp://hans@83.101.61.207
so "hans" is the username i granted access and he had to use the external ip adress.
RESULT: he is asked to type his username and pasword and then gets access to the maps
on my dns. PROBLEM: he can see them but cant open them. see picture.
when he tries to open it says : "page not available"...
