X Windows on the DNS-323
Just for a laugh, I decided to install gnome on the DNS-323. I connect to it using xming.
A tad slow, but it does make printer configuration easier

For some reason, I have a hard time believing this... ;-)
I would have thought that X alone with twm would have bogged down the machine, let alone Gnome... How is it that your only using 39mb of memory and 84mb of swap?
I guess I'll believe you tho...
I've been wanting to compile Xorg natively for the 323. Maybe I'll have a go at it.

Modify the /etc/gdm/gdm.conf
Add/modify the lines:
[security]
AllowRoot=1
AllowRemoteRoot=1
[xdmcp]
Enable=1
Install xming and off you go!
No need to compile it.]
But it *is* slow to get going. Once it's running, it's reasonable.
I had a problem with /tmp, needed correct privs (due to the way I set it up) so it should be chmod 777 /tmp
I did not do it with chroot debian, it was a native install.
If it doesn't work, you can always just remove it. But I found for some configuration stuff, it's the easiest way. Specifically with setting up the printers.
And it does end up using about 80M swapspace.

This is almost as wacked as the crazy idea I had, but let go because it's so impractical and far gone. There are these usb VGA cards and, of course, with a hub, you could put a keyboard and mouse on here too. That could get you a full working computer out of this thing.
I wonder if anyone will ever give it a try.
