Backing Up DNS 323 Usernames/Shares for Network and FTP

I work at a school and I'm setting up a 323 for storage of student files without having to go through our Active Directory server.  Well I actually had the shares all setup and permissions and then the webGUI crashed and erased all my permissions for the various folders.  So I wanted to figure out a way to backup all the usernames and permissions for both network connections and ftp connections (as labeled in the webGUI)

So I've gotten FFP installed--I've got SSH up and running.  I'm at a very low-level of knowledge with Linux but am learning.  I think I have now discovered the smb.conf file that is in /etc/samba and I need to copy that file onto the harddrive somwhere (/etc is all loaded in RAM correct?)

So my question is what else should I be backing up?  Will the samba.conf keep my usernames, network permissions, and ftp access permissions or are these kept somewhere else?

Also--is there a command line utility that would make it easier to add the new users, add their passwords, and give them network and ftp access to their home directory and not access to anything else?  Or is this accomplished easier via the webGUI?

Thanks!

Mike
