review: Synology DS-207 vs. DNS-323

The Synology DS-207 NAS vs. the DNS-323.
http://smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/29957/75/

The hardware/performance are about the same, but,
"The Synology DS-207 is priced almost twice what you can currently get a D-Link DNS-323 for ($329 vs. $189)..."

It has LAMP apache(?!)/php/mysql running on it out-of-the-box, but not too much more that hasn't been thrown together here, afaik.  And it looks like those features are what led to its favorable recommendation.

Hopefully D-link will take notice, and start coding.  Hopefully they'll get a clue that investment in software quality/features will go a long way for them.

I wonder -- can anyone get the Synology source?:

Re: review: Synology DS-207 vs. DNS-323

I bought the DS-207 and returned it to the shop after one evening of testing...
The mechanical build-quality of the D-Link box is much much better, installing the drives in the DS-207 is more difficult and the DS-207 is much noisier than the DNS. Three very disappointing points.
Further on the administration-web-GUI of the DS-207 is _very_ complex and _slow_. It will take you an hour to create a basic user-enviroment on the box and assign rights to the shares -  very, very annoying!
The LAMP-stuff sounds interesting, but i think its not really useable. The CPU seems to be far to weak for this.
From the hardware point of view the D-Link is definitly the better one. It has far more potential, let´s hope that D-Link will use it by improving the firmware!
