Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.
You are not logged in.
Even though I understand that FTP is not safe, I would like to make it run before I go on and try the more advanced fun stuff.
So here is the problem that I haven't solved:
I can't access the FTP server from outside the LAN. Inside the LAN everything is working just fine.
The port 21 is forwarded to the NAS in the router firewall (an SMC 7400ABR similar to a US Robotics router) and when I try to make contact I am asked for the username and the password, but after that nothing happens for a while. After that while I am just getting an empty directory listing.
I can access other internet FTP sources on the internet so I assume that my client is configured ok also.
The same happens when somebody tries to make a connect who is actually accessing from outside.
I also read other messages here on the forum and I think that I checked all the described solutions (no DNS entry, no fix IP in the DHCP etc.)
Because most of the guys here are smarter in analyzing the problem with more sophisticated tools, I'll create a user named 'test' with the password 'mydns' so that you can try to connect. To reach me from outside you can use 'ftp://diniwodasind.dlinkddns.com/'.
It would be great when somebody tells me what I need to configure to make this work
Thanks
D.
I also checked with the tools on 'dyndns.org' that the port 21 is actually open. When I erase the entry in the firewall the tool indicate that the request was blocked so the forwarding works...I checked also that the server reacts on the request (only with the password request but not with data).
So long

Well - I can connect, I can view the contents of the folder, and I can download the file contained therein which does not appear to be what it's name suggests - upload is not allowed.
It looks to me like the problem is on your client end - either your ftp client or your client side firewall(s).
For what it's worth, I'm using the CLI ftp client for Windows XP Pro, SP2, Windows firewall and a Linksys BEFSX41

I still can't access the FTP server from the internet when I am actually outside of my LAN.
Since fordem managed to connect, I think that the problem is not the configuration of my network, nor ISP.
I can connect to other ftp sites (like ftp://ftp.ftpplanet.com/) by just using the browser. So what do I do wrong? Or better: What do I need to do to connect?
Thanks
D.
Finally...
I managed to connect with a FTP client software from outside my LAN!!!
What I changed from before??? I used the client in active mode!
Now the next question.
Can the server be changed to support the passive mode? I figured out that for pretty much all other FTP sites the client uses the passive mode and maybe that is the reason why the server can not be connected with a regular browser.
Am I right on this?

I'm interested by the answer to this question...
I've got a dns-323 connected to a modem/router, with port 21 routed to dns-323 IP (static..), and port 8080 too (for http server).
From outside my LAN, accessing to http://xxxx.dlinkddns.com:8080 work successfully, but when trying " ftp://login:pass@xxxx.dlinkddns.com:21 " in Internet explorer, a error message is returned...
In my DNS-323 FTP SERVER settings :
FTP Server Status :
Status Started
Port 21
Max. User 2
Flow Control Unlimited
Idle Time 5
Client Language Unicode
So, what to do if I want to access to a specific FTP account created in my DNS from outside the LAN within Internet Explorer (ver. 8) ?

sil51: your client needs to be in active mode (meaning that the NAS will initiate a connection back to the client on port 20). For IE it is in the Internet Options -> Advanced -> untick "use passive ftp (for firewall and dsl compatibility)".
