DNS-323 HW Rev A1 and B1

I notise that is at least two ?  HW rev on DNS-323.

What is the difference between HW Rev A1 and B1 ?

Which is best ? A1 or B1 and can you use the same firmware for both of them.

Re: DNS-323 HW Rev A1 and B1

I briefly had a B1 revision before getting an A1 as an RMA unit. (Upgrading the firmware on my B1 killed it for whatever reason.)

I didn't notice anything significantly different between the two. My B1 used 2W less electricity than my A1 both in sleep mode and when active. This difference may be sample variations though.

Re: DNS-323 HW Rev A1 and B1

There are minor hardware differences between the 2.  I am using both and have no noticeable difference from a user standpoint.  There are some differences on how the SATA controller and USB controllers are configured, if you are working with them in a telnet prompt.

The firmware editions are compatible with both.

Re: DNS-323 HW Rev A1 and B1

Hi

Heres what i found:

- CPU Marvell Orion 88F5181 (revision A1) or 88F5182 (revision B1), 500 MHz
- Hard drive 2x 3.5" SATA, Marvell 88X7042 (revision A1) or integrated in SoC (revision B1)
- B1 has different memory chips (same basic specs)
- B1 Serial port is closer to the front.

Also red this.

No Lights on Startup:
........
Comments: This seems to be a known problem with hardware A1. Only solution is a replacement of the unit.

Something to be worried about ??? And is this a problem tha appears after a while ???

I've had my A1 for over two years, without a single glitch - so I'd say, it's nothing more to worry about that with any other piece of computer equipment.

And if it does happen, the first thing I would check would be the power adapter - same as I would for any other piece of computer equipment that displayed "No Lights on Startup".

Just got this error ("error" is too kind, this is a complete, unrecoverable hardware meltdown) with my B1 revision, and updated the FAQ/wiki to suit. It's not a simple "no lights on = power adapter" - the fan spins up but all lights stay off. Drives do not spin up. As per the wiki, the unit is completely unresponsive, although you can cycle the power to turn the fan off if you want to.

This happened today on my 4 month old unit, the second unit I've had to RMA (the first was DOA). Lucky me.

Thankfully I have all content duplicated elsewhere, nfi if the drives are buggered or what. If you learn nothing else today for god's sake DON'T WAIT FOR A FAILURE TO THINK ABOUT BACKUPS.

Be well.

Re: DNS-323 HW Rev A1 and B1

Have you tried disconnecting everything and seeing if it boots up? One of my units has gone semi belly-up. It freezes in U-Boot (I have serial access and can see) if GigE is attached... no ethernet or 100Mb is fine. It boots fine with the network cable disconnected; but will freeze instantly when the GigE cable is connected. Another unit I have works 100% fine in the same setup. The failed one use to work...

Very strange IMO; but the point is you might be able to identify some pattern in what makes your unit not start. May not be able to do anything about it - but it might be worth knowing.

Re: DNS-323 HW Rev A1 and B1

Better late than never - returned it to Dlink and three days later had a new one (reconditioned, I think, it's hard to tell). As to your question, no, no activity in any state, plugged or otherwise. Returning it was the last possible option so I did plenty of testing.

Plugged the drives into the new one and after a bit of Windows XP network struggle I was back in business.
