Hi.
I'm baffled right now.. and this probably simple, so forgive..
I've been setting up the dns-323 on my local network.
I connected it to my switch, set it up with static IP, and all was well.
My computer is also connected to the switch..
then I removed it from the switch, and connected it to my router..
Now I cannot get in contact with it. I've removed the static setup, and just run it through the router dhcp, but still no 'answer' from the dns-323.
I can see it in the client list on the router, but I can't access it via my computer...
My setup is:
Router(with integrated switch) -> localswitch - >computer 1,2,3,4 etc.
connecting the dns-323:
Router(with integrated switch) ->localswitch ->computer 1,2,3,4 etc.
->dns-323
The reason for the extra switch is that the router is far away from my computers, so I need a switch to relay internet etc.
I have a dreambox sat. box connected to the network, and this I can easily access from my computer...
Where's the obvious answer?

Hi Martin,
The first thing that jumps to mind is an access-list (ACL) on the router.
I presume you know the IP address given by the DHCP server. Try to 'ping' it. Even if it fails, it may update your ARP table. On the PC, run 'arp -a' and check if there is an entry. If yes, it is increasingly likely to be an ACL. If no it is a cabling/routing issue but I would be surprised as you say you see it registered in the DHCP client list.

Question - how did you "remove the static setup" if you cannot get in contact with it?
Static ip addresses are set at the device, so you would have to be logged into the DNS-323's web admin page to either set a static address or to remove it - if the addresses are being set at the router, then it is dynamic. Now - some routers have a feature that they call (incorrectly) static DHCP - the correct name for this is "DHCP reservation".
If you did not set (or remove) the address using the web admin page your problem could be a bad connection between the router and the DNS-323, also, if you made any changes to the network connection speeds, that could also cause it not to communicate with the router/switch.
There's a reset switch behind a pin hole on the back panel - try resetting it and then set it up again.

well.. the reset to default worked... somehow.. Now I'm retracing my steps..
Nosoiw - I tried pinging which didn't work.. it showed up when running the arp.. dunno what caused this..
Fordem - the reset worked... I removed the static settings by moving the dns-323 from the router to my switch.. that way I could easily contact it..

thinking.. I set the Lan Settings to 1000mbps because the switch is 1Gbit.. but the router is only 100mbps...
Case solved?

Setting the DNS at 1000 on a 100 capable router should be a problem, but because it appears in your DHCP clients list, it seems to work.
Which is consistent with the DNS appearing in your arp list; based on this, layer 2 connectivity should be fine. Check that the two IP addresses (PC and DNS) are in the same subnet (netmask incorrect?). If correct, I still suspect the router. Can you check that the router permits traffic between the various ports (as opposed to limiting traffic between the ports and the Internet which is presumably on a specific port).

Nosiow...
if you look at post #4 I seem to have contact...
I believe it was the lan settings... !
I think this is resolved... unless

and guys.. I appreciate the help!

If you set the DNS-323 to 1000 mbps (rather than auto), either whilst it is connected to a 10 or 100 mbps connection - or - subsequently move it to a 10 or 100 mbps connection it will not communicate, so that was your problem - you can if you like verify this (without having to reset the unit) by simply moving it back to the gigabit switch to change the speed settings.

Hi fordem.. I did, just to double check and 'fortunately' that produced the exact same error...
thanks!
