I bought a DNS-323 and two Western Digital 1TB Green drives. When I first installed them, they were both shown on the device. After trying to format the drives as a RAID 0 configuration, I could only see one of the drives and then I got a pink/purple light for the other. I wanted to verify it wasn't just some strange issue with the firmware (at the time it was 1.06 and I updated it to 1.07 recently), so I put the drive back in tonight before I decide to set up the RMA process. Well, the drives are both showing blue lights, but the device still only sees the one drive. Is there any way at all to verify the drive is dead before I send it off? I don't have another computer I can try, only a MacBook Pro, which I obviously can't put a 3.5" HDD in
Thanks for any feedback!

Since you have just formatted the drives and there's nothing to lose by trying if I were in your position I would try swapping the drives in the NAS and see if the drive 'failure' follows the drive to the new bay or if the 'failure' stays with the bay.
This exercise may help narrow down the problem to either the drive or the NAS.
Oh, and for the sake of completeness, you may want to try resetting the NAS to factory defaults using the reset button on the back of the device to rule out any configuration weirdness/corruption.

Having done all that, I remembered I had an external enclosure in the closet. It still had a drive in it so I turned it on to test it, and it still works. I popped the problem drive in and was not able to access it and it even made the "click of death" sound. I put the other drive that was in the enclosure back in it (just to make sure it didn't start acting goofy coincidentally) and sure enough it still worked. Looks as though the drive is dead after all. Thanks for the help!

Glad you got the problem narrowed down, but sorry your new drive died. Hopefully, WD will replace it quickly.
