Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.
You are not logged in.
Ok, I messed up. I installed fun_plug 0.4, changed telnet to use login and set a root password and store it on flash using the store_password.sh script. rebooted and tried to login as root. was not successful and error message given was wrong password. Weird as I'm very sure I'm using the same password as when I created it. The only difference is that during the root password creation, I got a warning message saying "weak password" (i used only 7 chars) but somehow it seems to accepted it when I re-entered it a second time.
I read that losing root password esp when its stored in flash is going to be a big problem but is there really no way at all to recover from this? Can I reflash the firmware? hard reset (using the pin)? restore to default factory settings using the web GUI?

That topic is on lost admin password to the web gui (I think). In my case, I lost the root password so i can still go into the web gui but i can't do any admin level changes via telnet...
Well, i managed to recover via a hard reset and reformating my drives... in case anyone else is interested.

Facing the same problem, stored a root password the the store-passwd.sh script. Afterwards I updated the firmware to 1.04 (CH3SNAS). Connecting with telnet works, but the password does not work. Any hint?

Did you try this:

This really helped me.
I downgraded from Firmware 1.08 beta to 1.07
The fun_plug.tgz you need for passwordless telnet is here:
http://dns323.kood.org/forum/p19176-Tod … tml#p19176
And then you just have to use passwd to change the root password and run /ffp/sbin/store-passwd to write it into memory.
Saved me really
