VLC - how to guide?

Hi

I'd like to install and setup VLC on my dns-323 so I can stream from my Dreambox sat. receiver. The dreambox side is easy enough, but I'm not sure how to go about doing it on the dns-323...

I found vlc here: http://www.box.net/shared/0xstexb0dm

a link from a user on this site, but I'm unsure if I need anything else..?

Re: VLC - how to guide?

Martin,

I guess you are trying to stream video using the vlc on the DNS-323 to the Dreambox.

This is unlikely to work, as the vlc needs to transcode the stream and the DNS does not have enough horsepower to do this.

Re: VLC - how to guide?

hm, I've seen several posts on DNS and media programs.. I think.. mediatomb, vlc, some others...

but yes, I am looking to run an avi file via vlc on dns to dreambox vlc client, so DNS is acting as a server, and yes, it needs to decode it.

Re: VLC - how to guide?

There are two different ways in which media servers can work. The typical use with Firefly or Mediatomb is that the server reads data off the disk and streams it out to the network without trying to change it or do any calculations. This works fine on the DNS-323.

The other way is transcoding, where the server reads data off the disk and tries to convert it into a different format or bitrate before it sends it on the network. This is like what you'd like to do with vlc. It's unlikely to work because the DNS-323 only has a low power processor and can't do all the calculations quick enough.

(I believe Firefly and Mediatomb can also do transcoding, but people using them on the DNS-323 will have it disabled)

Re: VLC - how to guide?

Hi Edward.

thanks, that takes me 1 step closer to understanding...

tell me, what would you use method 1 with? where it just streams without doing anything else?
what would you stream to then?

Yes, you are right, that is what I'm trying to do.. I think :-)

I hope to find a solution, but if it's not possible, then fair enough..

You would use that if the device which displays the stream can display the format and the bit rate (it understands what it gets from the media server)

edit: typo's

Re: VLC - how to guide?

Martin,

You can mount the DNS-323 in the Dreambox and playback using the DB vlc plugin (at least on Gemini fw).

I managed to VLC from a PC to dreambox last year but it is not practical, it tends to freeze even on wired network and does not handle fast forward well. Also the screen formatting was sometimes awkward not even mentioning lipsync problems.

In the end I acquired Popcornhour and have it since, it works perfectly well. Perhaps the new DB8000 will handle the playback better?

Which of these is the best?
