New unit & HDDs - does not find Volume 2 (DNS-323)

I have a new DNS-323, and two new WD Green 1Tb drives.

I put both HDDs into the unit.  Both went in snugly and seemed fine.

I followed the instructions in the Quick Guide.

Only 1 volume was listed, which I formatted as Standard (Individual Disks).

Both drives are in, and both show blue (no blinking) lights.

After the format was completed, I was still missing Volume 2.

Both drives are still showing blue (no blinking) lights.

I copied a large file across to find out which HDD was operational, and figured out that Volume 1 was the right hand drive.

The I removed the left HDD and put it straight back in again.  Then I turned the unit back on.  And both HDD lights blinked a bit then went to blue (no blinking) light.

The mapped drive had disappeared from Windows Explorer, so I tried to specify a volume using the Easy Search Utility again.  It would not let me set a volume.

So just to be trying something different, I turned off the unit and swapped the drives left to right and vice versa.

Again (still) only Volume 1 was listed in the Easy Search Utility.  I still could not map this drive.  (I may have had an incidence of the DLink "configuration thingy in a browser' open at the time.  I do not know whether this could have caused the problem with mapping a Volume.)

So I swapped them back again.

When I switched the unit back on, I only have Volume 2 listed.  I was able to map this one.  (Relieved.)

The file was still there, so running it, I found that the right side was now called Volume 2.  Now Volume 1 is missing.

Just in case you are confused, all along the same drive has not been working.

I am not sure what to try next.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Go to the status page in the web admin screens - does it show one drive or two?

Try reformatting the drive(s) one by one - see what happens.

Try testing the non-functioning drive with WD disk diagnostic tools http://support.wdc.com/product/download … mp;lang=en

Re: New unit & HDDs - does not find Volume 2 (DNS-323)

Tks fordem & mig.

Yesterday it occured to me that independent verification of failure would be useful.

I added the HDD to my desktop, and it was not listed at Post or in the Bios or in Internet Explorer.

There was a fair bit of stuffing around with this, so next I am going to see what my HDD supplier says.

If they are not forthcoming regarding a replacement, I'll try WD disk diagnostic tools (c/o mig); and/or Partition Magic.

I guess I would have thought 'failure' first off if the DNS-323 had not given a blue (non blinking) light.  Now I am wondering whether the orange light would only come up if the disk failed after formatting.
