I tried searching the forum for a thread about this, but it looks like I might be the first to experience this. If I missed the thread, just post the link if you don't mind and we can drop this one...
I picked up a DNS-323 and two 1TB Caviar Blacks the other day. It came with fw v1.06 installed, so I updated to fw1.07 and downloaded what I thought were the two files I needed (and maybe they are) from http://www.inreto.de/dns323/fun-plug/0.5/, being funplug and funplug.tgz. I used Vista to move the funplug.tgz and funplug files to Volume_1, and restarted the DNS-323, as the README.TXT said to do.
The DNS-323 will boot up and appear in Vista as the DNS-323 icon named Gerbil, but isn't accessable and the Windows Server icon named Gerbil does not appear. Immediately after the icon appears, the networking light on the DNS-323 turns off. It seems that it completely crashes, because even the activity light on the switch goes out, as if the unit isn't even on.
Telnet will not connect to the device either, and device is not accessable by navigating to it's assigned DCHP address of 192.168.0.182
Vista can't read either of these drives becuase of the filesystem used on them, and I don't have a MAC or *NIX based OS on any of my PCs.
I'm going to RTFM to see what the RESET button actually does, but I'm thinking the drives need to be reformatted.

Reset to default using the reset button and everything works fine, including telnet server. I don't know what settings I had that it didn't like, but all is well for now.
Maybe the upnp server or seomthing was conflicting, that was the only server I had enabled.
