data lost? - hard drives not recognized

Hi to everyone,

My first post here - I've just found this forum after hitting major issue with my DNS-323.

It has been working really fine within my LAN for several months:
- two Windows XP SP3 machines
- networked printer (connected to the router as well)
- DNS323

Once in a while I would get freeze networked/mapped (of DNS-323) drives. A reset through DNS-323 Web interface would clear the freeze problems. Drives would come nicely and data would be available.

This night, after freeze and restart, DNS-323 seems to believe that existing hard drives are new ones?

This is the DNS323 data/environment:
- firmware 1.05
- two Seagate drives (Barracuda) - each one of them with 500 GB
- DNS323 was configured to create 1GB of networked space

Any help is really appreciated - as you can guess, I feel really desperate at the moment.

Re: data lost? - hard drives not recognized

I wanted to check your feedback on the advice I received from DNS Technical Support:
They believe that my data (stored with RAID0, on these two 500GB hard drives) are still OK. However, for whatever reason, the DNS323 wants to reformat these drives.

As advised by them, I upgraded my firmware to 1.06 (pulled out hard drives prior to firmware update and inserted them back into DNS323 after upgrade).
The firmware upgrade did not change anything.

This is the latest plan suggestion, as per DNS Technical Support:
- I should let DNS323 reformat these two drives
- prior to reformat, I should connect evey one of these hard drives to any Windows machine and back the existing data up (to one 1TB hard drive)
- after backup, these drives should be returned back into DNS323
- these drives should be reformatted by DNS323
- (backed up) data should be moved back into individual drives. I didn't confirm, it should probably happen outside of DNS323 box (every drive should get the data that were initially on these drives)

I asked if I could buy 1TB drive and move the data from both of these into two separate folders (on this 1TB drive) and was told that 1TB drive, with the above plan is OK. I specifically asked if the RAID0 configuration state would be the concern and was advised that this will be OK (the RAID0 setting).

Does all of the above make sense to you guys?
A feedback from experienced member of the forum will be really appreciated.
