Running optware's Squid

Hi,

I'm trying to use the optware's Squid to run a proxy server on my dns-323. I've installed it and tried to configure it according to various tutorials on the web but it doesn't work. I chmoded all necessary directories but it terminates as soon as it starts and leaves no log file.

Has anybody had success running it on dns-323? Are there any other alternatives?

Thanks a lot,
AlefSin

Re: Running optware's Squid

Did you considered polipo?
It's available through ffp and optware.
It's lighweigth and pretty straigthforward to configure.
I run it since a few days and I'm satisfied.

Re: Running optware's Squid

Thanks mushanga, I didn't know about polipo. It seems to be much lighter than Squid so I'll try it. I had a feeling that Squid for a small NAS like DNS-323 might be overkill. I'll report back when I install and configure polipo.

mushanga: I've installed polipo (from optware) and configured it. It works like a charm! Thanks a lot.

Re: Running optware's Squid

You're welcome!
But now I have it running since a few days I must warn you: it can die unexpectedly sometimes sad
When that happens you just need to start it again.
Maybe consider writting a small watchdog script to do it automatically.
Tell me how it behaves for you

Re: Running optware's Squid

I didn't die on me but then again, I've been changing it's config all the time and restarted it after each turn. The longest run was 12 hours I guess!

Btw, did you set up a crontab job to flush/purge/clean the cache? Polipo's manual says you have to do that. I've set a job that purges the cache every night.

I'll let you know if I face similar problem as yours over the next few days.
