Hi All,
I found this site thru google. Finally, I might get some attention!
I recently purchased DNS 323. I have 2 500GB hard drives in RAID-1 configuration ext2. I also installed latest firmware (v1.03). But I cannot get email to work. Thinking that perhaps its an issue with my ISP, I connected to my ISP's smtp server thru telnet and was able to send email fine. However, it does not works with DNS-323 . When I click "test" button - its says failure. Just in case, I also checked my email to see if it did infact send email - but alas - no hope.
I also contacted dlink - but haven't got them to acknowledge any problems. They keep referring to problems with my network.
I have noticed that since I installed DNS-323 on my home network, my internet access has been slow. Sometimes its crawling. Weird I think. Could someone suggest a networking monitoring tool for windows? I will appreciate.
Hope y'all can help me. Thanks.

I have the same problem and its even trying to connect to my own hosting server.....
Upon checking all mail logs - I never see a connection attempt from the box to my mail server......
I am at a loss on what to try and do about it - and Dlink has been no help....

One of you has indicated firmware 1.03, the other doesn't mention what firmware he(she) is using.
Pre-firmware 1.03 my DNS-323 would not email disk failure events to me, although it did email other alerts - having upgraded to 1.03, I now get emails if I pull a disk.
At least one person has reported problems sending email because his (her) email server rejected the emails from the DNS-323 due to a missing or malformed date header, apart from that I'd say check your configuration or your ISP's guidelines. More & more ISPs are using tighter security in an attempt to fight SPAM, and that's one possible cause of your problem.
This is what my settings look like.
Login Method - account
UserName - fordem
Password - ********
SMTP server - mail.ispdomain.net.cc
Sender email - fordem@ispdomain.net.cc
Receiver email - fordem@ispdomain.net.cc
The settings have obviously been edited, but they're close enough and hopefully clear enough that you get the idea.
One more thing - if your mail server is not on the local LAN - make sure that you have entered the default gateway in the LAN setup page, and if you're not specifying the SMTP server by ip address, make sure that you have a DNS server specified in the LAN settings.

shahkb -
For Windows network monitoring, you could take a look at PRTG (www.paessler.com) - this is an SNMP graphing tool, so if you don't have an SNMP enabled device, it might not work for you - if you don't, there's is some sort of sniffer built-in, which I have never used. They offer a free, three sensor version, so all you stand to lose is your time.
I've been using the free version on my home network, and after adding the DNS-323 (back in January) I did set PRTG to monitor the traffic for quite a while, primarily to get an idea of what the read/write throughput was - I did not notice and unusual activity and have not experienced network perfomance issues.

I have 1.03 installed - 1st thing I did after installing the hd....
Again for me - I run my hosting business - so I have root access to the server(s) and logs etc. When I click test I see no connection attempt from my ip on any access log from my server.....
for the mail server address I have used both a alpha and numeric ip in case the alpha was not resolving..... still no go
this is what is being passed to the email program on the DNS box
email -h mail.whitefish.net -p 25 -a 1 -u dns -w ******* -s dns@whitefish.net -d tcs@whitefish.net -t
the -w password has been masked here....
not sure what the -a param is and assume -t is test mode?
I manually run the command from a shell prompt and it just sits there - no response or text verbage back, I have to close the connection to get a prompt back - ctrl-c will not break out of it.
ok the -a is auth mode, email program also has a -c capacity, -f free and -i interval params
email v1.02.02212006
usage: email -m mode [-s Saddr] [-d Daddr] [-h HostServer] [-p port]
[-a auth] [-u uname] [-w passwd] [-i interval] [-t test]
[-c capacity] [-f free]

I was fiddling with my email settings - kind of attempting to simulate some of the problems, and on three occasions, when I clicked the test button, the dialog said sending and after a minute or so, failed, when in actual fact, the mail was sent - but - what I remembered was this - when initially setting up the email alerts, I could not get it to work, and the trick was to click "Save settings" before clicking "Test email"
Maybe you could try that and see if it works for you.

Thank you all. Your response and suggestion are way better than what I got from DLink.
My ISP's SMTP server works fine. I manually telnet to their SMTP server and was able to send email to yahoo.
I have also tried hitting "test" button after saving the settings.
I also checked to see if test message ("failure") was simply bogus and that it was sending email. Alas, no emails.
I don't know how to get telnet access - otherwise I would check email logs.
Just to remind, I am running in RAID-1 configuration with firmware v1.03 using two 500GB disk. I bought this unit recently.
All your tips are highly appreciated.
Thanks

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but have you tried both the Account and Anonymous settings in the DNS email setup?

Look at the top left corner of this page - you'll see a couple of places where it says "Wiki" - links that takes you to the Wiki sections of the site.
Choose the one for the DNS-323 Wiki and goto the "How to" section, in there you'll find details on how to create a file called fun_plug that is the key to extending the features on the DNS-323, along with details on adding telnet and other stuff.
It's relatively easy and quite safe, in that you're working with files on the first disk, rather than in the firmware itself.

I have come to the conclusion that my dns box email program is hosed. Watching network traffic when clicking on the test email button - there is NO traffic other than the web comming out of the box.
I am going to have to figure out why the progra is not making any attempt to communicate with the outside world...

Thanks all. I tried both "account" and "anonymous" settings for email , before and after saving settings, but no luck.
I read on DLink description of firmware v1.03 - which mentions "Fixed e-mail notifications when using RAID 1 Mode."
But it seems they did a sloppy job!
Here is DLink's Revision Info for v1.03
¤ Fixed Daylight Savings Time causing GUI crash.
¤ Fixed 2 gig limitation for Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista .
¤ Fixed e-mail notifications when using RAID 1 Mode.
¤ Added support for *.mp4 files on UPNP Av Server.
¤ Added ability to update firmware without having HDD installed.
¤ Added EDIT icon under scheduled downloads to modify existing schedules.
¤ Requires Easy Search Utility 3.5.0.0 or higher

I was the guy reporting in an earlier post about the missing date header in mails created by the dns-323.
I tried to discuss the matter several times with the D-Link "support", but all they did was throwing meaningless standard questions like "what ISP do you use" and "how is your mail server configured".
I had already reported all this to them, - IN DETAILS, and also attached logs from the server indicating exactly what the problem was (the mail where rejected because the didn't containg any valid Date Headers)
Finally, I went over to the forum at smeserver.org, and asked the same questions...
If you read through the topic at http://contribs.org/viewtopic.php?p=165614#165614 you'll find a good explanation about what causes this misfunction, and also a suggestion for a solution (it works great for a Smeserver!)
I really don't give 5 cents for that joke support at D-link...
All I can suggest is that EVERYONE experiencing this problem file REPORTS to that joke support, - sooner or later they'll have to wake up and realize they'll have to act!

Hi,
Thank you. I have given up on dlink support - they asked me to return the box, however, after reading your post I decided to try fixing myself.
As a first step, I installed the fun_plug. Now I can telnet to the box. But I wasn't able to find email log and i don't really know much of linux to find out which program is called for emailing. I went to the web page you mentioned but it was not clear to me what was going on I couldn't find any file by the name
17check_basicheaders
or any program called
siganl-event email-update
Could you please give me some more lead? Which is the email service? Where is the log? Which configuration file if any that I should change.
Thanks,
Kilo

Well, I'll try to explain the problem for you:
The problem with the mails generated from the dns-323 is that they don't contain any Date Headers, - which is a NON STANDARD behaivour and by many smtp-servers denied.
The server I'm using is a Smeserver (see http://www.smeserver.org for more details), which is really a server based version of RHEL/Centos, running qpsmtpd as a front end for the smtp server...
In the case of Smeserver, the deamon qpsmtpd takes care of all the "sanity checks" even before allowing the incoming mail to actually enter the rest of the system...
The 17check_basicheaders & siganl-event email-update (really a typo, - should be "signal-event email-update") are specialized things ONLY useful in a Smeserver, thanks to the template system it's built on.
But what it's all about is a way to DISABLE the sanity check function "check_basicheaders" in your mail server for a specific host, or as in my case for the entire internal lan (I'm using the server in a server/gateway mode)
The way to do this is not always very simple (shouldn't of course ever be necessary!!!) and depends on what system you're using.
What smtp server are you using???
Please refer to the documenation, or ask in relevant forums.....

I recieved an email from D-Link about this issue after complaining about it in late January.... They identified an issue where the emails wouldn't work when the 323 was in RAID1 mode... After the switch to 1.03 firmware it STILL wouldn't work. I deleted all the fields and re-entered all the info a few times, and on the last try, it FINALLY worked....
The strange thing is, I have a D-Link WBR-2310 router with a similar function, and NEVER had a problem with it. What I did was delete the mail-notification info in the router too, and put ALL of the info into notepad, and did a copy & paste into both the router & DNS-323. The router worked, 323 didn't... This is ALSO what I did when I re-entered the info the 323, and then all of a sudden it works now...

I did a test when I got home today.... email alerts were working FINE... then I went into the LAN settings, and deleted the DNS IP addresses. Test emails now FAILED.... I was using the ISP's DNS addresses in there at first, and then I used my router's IP address, and it resolved fine... 10.10.5.25 in my case...

You have a couple of different options here.
The first is to specify the mail server by ip address, which I would not recommend unless you are running your own mail server.
If you specify the mail server by URL, you MUST have a way to resolve that URL, you can either specify a DNS server, your's if you have one, or your ISP's if you don't, or if you are using a broadband router as a gateway, you can specify the router - although the router does not provide DNS server functionality, it will provide DNS forwarder functionality, and forward the request to the ISP's DNS server.

Well, I have figured out part of my problem.
The DNS box can not get outbound via port 25, but if I run via command line with params and change the port to 26 (I run a 2nd port because of isp port blocking) and the email will go thru, but with header probs as mentioned above, the email server is at least accepting the email but the date is comming up 12/31/69 4:00pm.....
whats weird - my email client goes out on port 25 just fine, but the dns box cant.
So my next attempt will be to see if I can modify the email.conf to use port 26 instead of 25. I have to do this cause I do not use my ISP email servers at all, dont even have a account with them, just the cable service.
Will advise....

I added a blurb about the email alert issue to the Known issues on the Wiki....

Obviously, we either talk about different issues here, or I'm unable to make myself clear enought in English!
The message I've tried to report here as well as to the poor Dlink support is simply:
The dlink dns-323 delivers mail with incomplete mail headers (the headers don't contain any Date Headers).
This is a NON STANDARD behaivour and is being refused by many (a growing number!) SMTP servers.
I reported earlier about a way to bypass this if you're running your own SMTP server, but that is of course nowhere near a "solution".
The only "solution" for this is that Dlink rewrite their software so that the headers of the generated mails follow defacto standard!!!
Hopefully, my message was a little more clear this time;-)

Again, Thank you all.
Jumba, I use my ISP's smtp server. I don't know what server they use and I don't think they will listen to me if I tell them to apply a patch like you did. Instead, I am going to keep pushing Dlink to do something about the email header.
Despite not having email functionality, I am still happy with dns-323. I have my data on RAID-1 that doesn't hog a lot of power. But then I read in another thread that RAID-1 in dns-323 is not fully tested! more to worry - ha ha
Thanks all,
Kilo

shahkb, can you confirm if you have entered the DNS info into the LAN settings page on your DNS-323?
Jumba, I am not quite sure why you are getting so bent out of shape. Good work with uncovering the issue with the date headers, but note that this is not the ONLY reason that the notifications may not work. In addition to that, the original poster hasn't mentioned anything about the date header issue other than asking you for further info about it. There-fore, my suggestion to check that the email & DNS info in properly set up would be the logical first thing to check... I wasn't even the first person to suggest this.
Besides that, the correction you gave (sorry if I am not correct about this) is for an INTERNAL SMTP server you may be using on your LAN, and the original poster clearly stated that they are using their ISP's SMTP server.
EDIT: Whoops... didn't refresh the page for a while, and missed shahkb's reply before I posted... /EDIT

Hi,
Yes, I checked network settings on DNS-323. It is set to be a DHCP client, and the information it picked on DNS servers is accurate. IP address of both DNS1 & 2 are exactly as in my PC (which is also set to be a DHCP client).
Thanks,
Kilo

Does the default gateway match also?

Hi,
Yes, the default gateway is same as for PCs in the network.
I guess I will just have to wait until they come out with a new firmware.
Thank you all,
