raid keeps becoming degraded on brand new drives + DNS323

Hi all,

I just got the DNS-323 about a week ago, along with 2 x 1.5GB Samsung Spinpoint drives, model # HD154UI

I'm using Firmware 1.07, which was already installed on the unit when it arrived.

The first time around, I did 1TB of RAID 1, and used the remaining space for JBOD ..

After a few days, I heard horrible machine-gun clicking from one of the drives and noticed a pink light.  I logged into the admin and sure enough, I had the dreaded RAID: Degraded message.  Note that I have automatic rebuild off.

Well, I figured maybe the DNS-323 wasn't happy with a mix of RAID1 plus JBOD, so I reformatted both drives and just had 1.5TB of RAID 1...

A couple of days have gone by now, and while I don't hear the dreaded clicks of doom, the status says "Degraded" under sync time again.  I'm currently running a manual rebuild to see what happens.

Does anyone know why this keeps happening?  Mostly, I wanted the DNS-323 to serve as a place to back up all of my PCs to a huge pile of hard drive space, and to serve as a network share for all of my media (mp3, video)... Maybe RAID 1 isn't the best option for this, but RAID 0 seems scary in that one drive failing means I could lose ALL of my data...  Any suggestions on what I should be using would be helpful as well...

Thanks for your time...

Re: raid keeps becoming degraded on brand new drives + DNS323

I had the same hope.. and the same shattered dreams.

I'm using JBOD and a script that rsync's the drives nightly, sort of a psudo raid. But I'm having problems with the 2nd drive going offline.

My raid problems were either a pink LED or a degraded raid. I did notice while backing up that everything was great when I heard a drive spin down and the LHS drive led stopped blinking. Checked the webadmin and sure enough it was degraded and the slot 2 disk stopped filling up.

To set up the rsync - try this http://dns323.kood.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=1150. Hopefully you'll have more luck then me.

On a DNS-323 JBOD refers to a configuration where the two physical disks are used to create a single volume - (or space left over from a RAID array is made available) - this is probably not what you had in mind when you posted the above.

You need to be careful with JBOD configurations as the failure of a single disk may result in all of your data becoming inaccessible, even if all of the data is on the surviving drive.  When one drive fails the data physically stored in the remaining drive will only be accessible if the unit is not rebooted.

It's my belief that neither JBOD or RAID0 configurations are worth using on these units - mind you, they both work - but RAID0 offers no performance enhancement and so is not worth the added risk of data loss, and JBOD would only be of use if your data sets were larger than the capacity of a single drive, and again not worth the added risk.
