Raid 1 Mistery...

Hi to everyone...

I'm pretty newbie about Dns 323 (i bought it a month ago) and first of all i would like to thank you for the interesting post and answers i found on this forum.
I would like to share with you an experience i had a few days ago in order to better understand what happened and what should i do to avoid data losses in the future.

First of all, i would point out that the firmware version is 1.07 (with no add-ons whatsoever) and inside the Nas i installed  two disks:

1) Samsung HD103UJ SpinPoint 1TB
2) Seagate ST31500341AS Barracuda 1.5TB


The disks are in Raid 1 for 1 tb (Volume_1) and JBOD for the remaining 500 gb (Volume_2).


I bought the DNS 323 in order to store my dvd and mp3 collection and have a backup of some data (i.e. pictures, documents, etc.).

After saving the data on Volume_1, i rearranged the folders nesting them by topic (i.e. Audio, Video, Documents) instead of by source disk in which the were saved on my desktop (i.e. Disk F, Disk G, etc.) like they were when i originally copied them. I started using the Nas to save new files (mp3 and Divx).

Volume_2 was about empty, i just saved on it a backup of some pictures and movies (about 20 gb) i still had to classify.


For about a month the Nas worked find, and i did not experience any problems.


A few days ago, probably after a power failure, i noticed entering the control panel that Raid 1 was "Degraded" on Samsung Disk. Following the information i found on this forum, i backed up data i saved directly on Nas, removed the Samsung Disk, deleted existing partition using my desktop Pc, reinstalled it on DNS-323, waited for the format process, did a manual rebuild.

After that, i found:

- Data on Volume_1 (RAID1) were still there, but they had the original directory structure (Disc F, Disk) and not the new one. New data i copied in the last days (those i backed up before rebuilding) were missing...

- Data on Volume_2 (JBOD) were lost.


How could it happen? It seems like everything went back at the time i originally saved my data on Volume_1...

Also, i cannot understand why data on the remaining 500 gb were lost if they were on the Seagate that was working correctly...


Could you help me? Any hint  would be appreciated.

A question for you ...

On what basis did you decide to remove the Samsung disk, why didn't you remove the Seagate?

The control panel did not tell you that RAID1 was degraded on the Samsung disk - it told you that your RAID status was degraded - and you chose a drive that you wanted to use as the master in the rebuild process and removed the other drive and wiped it's partitions away.

Based on what you say happened, it appears that your RAID array was degraded prior to your storing new files, and that you may have been unaware of this.  You then discovered the degraded status, and for whatever reason, chose the wrong drive to remove and removed the drive that had the current, valid data - so having wiped that off, you then reinstalled the drive and allowed the system to rebuild from the drive with the older data.

With regard to Volume_2 disappearing - well - that's just how this JBOD implementation works.

Thank  a lot for your answer.
i thought the Samsung disk was the one that had to be fixed because I could only see the Seagate disk from the control panel (actually i don't remember where). Apart from that, i havel a few questions:
1) Both leds were blue, are they useful to undestand if there are problems with the disks or with Raid?
2) If it happens again, how could I correctly identify the disk to be replaced?
3)For what concerns data on the JBOD, i would lose them in any case, regardless the disk i replace or there is a way to rebuild the Raid array keeping the JBOD partition (that in my case was working fine)?

If somethings wrong they usually change to amber.

2) If it happens again, how could I correctly identify the disk to be replaced?

You dont need to know. You can just start the rebuild process (webinterface or ssh) and let the RAID decide what to do.

3)For what concerns data on the JBOD, i would lose them in any case, regardless the disk i replace or there is a way to rebuild the Raid array keeping the JBOD partition (that in my case was working fine)?

I dont think theres an other way.

      I dont think theres an other way.

Not entirely true.  If your Linux skills are decent, you can go in with telnet or ssh and manually rebuild the raid array.  The "JBOD" part left is just another array.  You can manually restart it.  Only if you change partition information or format a drive (which the web GUI does both) will you lose it.  Once the arrays are back up and working (and sync'ed), everthing should be back to normal after a reboot.
