Issues connecting to DNS 323 on Network

Hi All

I have been having a few issues with my DNS 323 ever since I got it a year or so ago and would like some help to rectify the situation.

First up I love this device. It serves it purpose quite well and overall I have been very happy with it despite the following problems that seem to be ongoing

1. I often have to remap the drive which is very frustrating. I find myself doing this once a fortnight or there abouts. When going into explore and clicking on the drive it gives and error message about being unable to connect and that the device name is already in use. Cannot seem to find and answer on this that has fixed the issue. So heres what I am running. I have a dell inspiron 630m running XP Pro and a wireless connection (54mbps). It has an intel 2.4 Ghz processor and 1GB of Ram approx. I also run Kaspersky anti virus on the computer. An interesting point here is that I have to turn off Kaspersky in order to transfer files to/ from the DNS. My modem is a netgear cable wireless modem/router and I am with optus. I also have connected to the network a desktop which runs a wired connection to the modem/router. The desktop runs XP pro also. Lastly I have a Samsung HD TV connected to the modem/router with LAN cable.
The DNS plugs into the back of the modem/router (obviously) and I have a printer connected to the DNS. Inside are 2 500GB Seagate drives configured with Raid 1 Mirroring and I have the lastest firmware, downloaded about 2 weeks ago.

OK first question is Why do I keep losing the connection?

Next question relates to the UPnP AV Server. I used to be able to stream content from the DNS to the Samsung TV. However it is no longer reading the content on the drive. When I attemot to refresh the contents in the DNS config page, it gets to about 45% and then stops and says "refreshed successfully. It is like it is stopping itself midway through. It takes about 25 minutes to get up to 45%. Any ideas?

Thanks all

Jason

Re: Issues connecting to DNS 323 on Network

One possible reason you keep loosing the connection, may be that you are using dynamic (DHCP) addressing with the DNS-323 and the ip address changes every few days, to fix this, either set a static ip address on the DNS-323 (preferable) or use DHCP reservations.

A second possible reason, coupled with the first reason, is that you may be mapping the share using the host name rather than it's ip address - without a DNS server to resolve the name to it's matching address, name resolution doesn't work well - to fix this, use a static address or DHCP reservation and map by ip address.

Unfortunately I can not offer advice on the AV server issue, I don't use it and have no experience with it.
