I am lacking in space and would like to setup the 323 in the basement of my home. Does the 323 have the capability to connect to a network wirelessly? If not, is there a workaround?

You can:
- either connect your DNS-323 to your Wireless Router/Access point, if your Wifi Access point can be installed in your basement (wire connection between your Wifi AP and the DNS-323)
- or connect your DNS-323 to a second Wifi AP, on which you have possibility to install an opensource firmware like dd-wrt on it ... and configure this second Wifi AP in "client mode" (wireless connection between your first Wifi AP and the DNS-323, if you have already a Wifi Access point, which can't be installed in your basement)

I seriously doubt that he'll be able to achieve "sufficent data rates" even with .n hardware, although that would depend on what his idea of "sufficent" is - my suggestion is to forgo wireless for heavy data lifting, go wired.

There are other options:
Go for powerline data adapters - many manufacturers make them, maybe dlink? Belkin for sure
or get a wireless adapter eg: Belkin do a ethernet to Wifi adapter I used on my xbox 1.
