2TB RAID1 ST32000542AS LP upgrade experience

I have splashed money on 2x2 TB low power Seagate disks, which have reduced spindle motor speed. If you have a budget for it, I can highly recommend this upgrade.

The migration was painless on a dedicated Linux PC and copying 900GBytes of data over to the new RAID set took just over 4 hours.

The 2TByte disks run significantly cooler than the original 7,200 rpm ST31000340AS, especially thanks to the low power spindle motor. While the old disk set was reaching 44C, the new ones are lukewarm at 36C.

This was measured at the end of the busy data migration with free airflow around the disks, so it gets even more pronounced in the DNS-323 enclosure.

The fan runs definitively less frequently on the new disk pair.

Finally the transfer tests with jumbo frames off showed slight decrease in write performance on the new disk array but the read performance is better, which can be attributed to bigger embedded disk cache.

New disk pair:

Iteration 2:     11.57 MB/sec
Iteration 3:     11.53 MB/sec
Iteration 4:     11.64 MB/sec
