WRONG Level Firmware upgrade on DNS-323 and Fix

How of fix a problem caused by a complete Moron : ie Me.

Keywords Brick Blank Upgrade Firmware dns-323 dns 323

This issue started when a mate said he put on the latest firmware for the dns 323 and it had variable fan control
I was at 1.03 this was available in the latest FW release (1.08B05).

I noted that there were 2 revisions A and B

So I read the readme for both...

DNS-323 Firmware Release Notes 1.08B05 ( which is 1.07 ?)

Firmware: 1.07
Hardware: A1, B1, C1

At the bottom of my dns I have REV A. Me being stupid though that this was = to A1

WRONG !!!!

Like a lemming running towards the water I installed the wrong firmware level ie REV B onto my REV A box.
When I bought it back up nothing... No Admin screen.. So I went to bed.

I was at work at most of the day so I called first a supplier as this was out of warranty by about 2.5 years as I thought
I may have bricked this one. New one was 320.00 which was about 40 bucks more than what I originally paid for this.
Then shot an email to d-link out of warranty dep. ( They were very quick with the email back to their credit !)

Email back to me...

I have spoken with a technician and he agrees that you will more than
likely not require parts however in order to properly repair this unit
he estimates around 2 and a half hours. If this estimate is to be a
guide for you then you are looking at $70.00 x 2.5 which is a total of
$175.00 for the repair. This is just an estimate and the price could be
slightly more or slightly less so please inform me if you would like to
go ahead so that I can create the necessary documentation.
Thank you and I look forward to your response.

So 320 and 175 if I could not fix this....

Steps I did to fix.

First I installed nmap  (port scanner) to see if the webservice was running on the dns... Nope.

The plan was to try and get the web service running so I could reflash the dns. Some reading I did some where
I can't recall where said that there was change in the config files from ascii between versions which was more than likely the
reason why the webserver did not start. I knew a hard reset may not help me as that just resets the config files im still stuck
at the flash level.

My DNS still had an ip address ! so somthing was running. And after some mucking about ( pulling both drives out and turning on and off)
I managed to get my computer to see the share !!!

So first step was care of a guy in the forum with different issues. I copied this verbaitim as a point of reference.

Install fun plug

Since you still have access to the DNS-323 share, you could try installing fonz's fun_plug v0.4
http://www.inreto.de/dns323/fun-plug, installation is very easy...

    fun_plug README.txt wrote:

    -- Installation --

Unpack funplug-0.4.tar.gz to the root of the first volume. It
contains two files: fun_plug and fun_plug.tar. Reboot and wait a
    minute.

The telnet server will start automatically.

NOTE: Do not use WinZip, it will corrupt the fun_plug script.

This allowed me to telnet into my box.

Now then I ran a ps to see if the webs was running...

No it was not.

So then I issued

/ # /web/webs
Segmentation fault

I then navigated to the /web/webs directory and noted that the ddns.conf file was GONE..

So via this forum I found what was in this

CF-DDNS-ENABLE = "0"
CF-DDNS-USERNAME = ""
CF-DDNS-PASSWORD = ""
CF-DDNS-DOMAIN = ""
CF-DDNS-SERVER = ""
CF-DDNS-TIMEOUT = "2073600"

I put this back using vi ( google the command line interface I used it when I was in uni but was rusty)

then I ran / # /web/webs and it started.

I then when to try and see if the admin screen came back.... It did !
I quickly went to reflash the firmware and it suceeded.

Whoo you say ! ( Well I did). Everything came back. Drive data etc.
I then backed up the config of the dns from the web ui. (Must have been a premonition)

Then I saw a new option looooook Jumbo frames ! So i turned it on and guess what. The admin screen hung.

Reboot.

This time nmap showed I had telnet and webserver (port 80) open but I got nothing back from the
dns admin screen just a timeout. I then tried a telnet to port 80 and I got some html errors ( Yay as again something was running)
and a telnet opened up a screen but a ps completely hung the box.

I could see the disk sizes comeup on the shares within windows but I could access no data.

I am unsure of this next postulation this problem may have occured because the new firmware removed some config files
I needed on the box and the save after changing the config exposed the issue. (Somebody who really knows what they are doing can clarify this)
I knew now I could use the hard reset because the firmware was now at the right level... So I did after pulling
all my drives.

It picked up the dhcp server and I got the admin screen back !!!
I then loaded my backup config file... Rebooted put in my drives and rebooted.

All data was there HOWEVER.......

After this I was left with a flashing RHS disk light.

Checked the dmesg.out file

ext3: No journal on filesystem on sda2
EXT2-fs warning: mounting unchecked fs, running e2fsck is recommended
ext3: No journal on filesystem on sdb2
EXT2-fs warning: mounting unchecked fs, running e2fsck is recommended

Telnet into your dns and run the following
( Use -f or you will need to press y)

If you have configured 'two separate disks', you can now check
filesystems with:

  e2fsck -f /dev/sda2
  e2fsck -f /dev/sdb2

/ # e2fsck -f /dev/sdb2
e2fsck 1.32 (09-Nov-2002)
Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes
Pass 2: Checking directory structure
Pass 3: Checking directory connectivity
/lost+found not found.  Pass 3A: Optimizing directories
Optimizing directories:  69681202 70336612
Pass 4: Checking reference counts
Pass 5: Checking group summary information

/dev/sdb2: ***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
ERROR/ #

After this was run.. No more flashing lights and DNS is back to normal..

I hope any other stupid bastards like myself find this most excellent website ( where I got all of this info and put it all together
into one document) I am not an expert. Thank heavens for sites like this.

Re: WRONG Level Firmware upgrade on DNS-323 and Fix

I got this back from D-link...

We have tested FW 1.07 on both A and B revision and have not seen any
issues.

Kind Regards,
Technical Support Team

I sent back

Thanks for the update.

Unfortunately this was not the case for me. I went from 1.03 to 1.08B05 on
a Rev A box.
The webs service did not start because the ddns.conf file was missing... (
No idea what happened to it)

I managed to fix that and reflash down to 1.06 which works and is the
recommended level on the d-link website.
There is no 1.07 or 1.08 listed under REV A only 1.06B5.

Are you saying that I can install 1.08B05 which is clearly listed under
REVB on my REVA box without a problem ?

Email back to me

Thank you for your email.

The current 1.08B05 is applicable to both revisions.
