Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.
You are not logged in.
So after some mucking around now I find my samba conf is backwards which is really irritating. I've tried to telnet in and change the config but it's always reset after a reboot to the same crossed-up setup.
how do i fix this?

Put your changes into the funplug script to make them survive reboot.

Not sure this is your issue. But when this happened to me I just need to ...
1. power off device. eject both drives.
2. insert drive you want to be volume_1 and power up unit. after dns is up and running (aka you can see web page,it will show the drive as volume_1) ... power off device.
3. insert 2nd drive and power up dns again.
your drive order will now be swapped. At least this worked for me in the past.
