Several users have reported slow samba access with various version of OSX
one suggestion is to add the following line to smb.conf
[global]
large readwrite = no
another solution is to install AFP
AFP browsing is fast here using Snow Leopard

This works for me, and doubled my speeds:
sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0
