Networking Question

I'm currently using a DNS-323 within a multiple office environment.  If my unit is connected into office A, I can ping the unit by name and by IP, however I cannot ping the unit by name from office B or office C.  I can ping the unit by IP from office B or office C.  For arguments sake, I moved the unit to office B and the same issue was exhibited from office A and office C.

The unit has not been modified, it is using the native, most recent firmware.  I want to be able to access the shares on the unit by name and not by IP.  Unfortunately I do not have control of the network.

Any thoughts?

Re: Networking Question

Providing that the routing works correctly between the offices and you can access the DNS-323 by its IP address your only option since you do not have control over the network DNS servers is to use the local PC's hosts file for name to IP mapping.

Re: Networking Question

I was afraid of that.  Unfortunately using a local host file is not an alternative as there's a potential for the IP to change and the box will always be accessed by different computers.

Thanks for your reply.

Re: Networking Question

You *could* use dyndns. Normally it's used for global network addresses, but I think you can also use it for LAN addresses.
