change samba configuration file

Is there a way (other than funplug) to change some of the settings in the smb.conf file?

Re: change samba configuration file

Which settings are you wanting to change?

DNS-323 • 2x Seagate Barracuda ES 7200.10 ST3250620NS 250GB SATAII (3.0Gb/s) 7200RPM 16MB • RAID1 • FW1.03 • ext2

Re: change samba configuration file

I have a DNS-323 (firmware 1.07) and tried to install fun-plug 0.4 to explore NFS as an alternative to Samba.  I don't think I ever got it working properly -- pretty much a wasted weekend of effort.  I'll try again with a spare drive when my family isn't around bugging me for server access.

Experimenting with samba on my home computer I've realized some real performance gains by tweaking send/recv buffers on the client end and I'm wondering about some of the server settings to increase throughput/reduce latency.

I was wondering if I can tweak the samba setting on the DNS-323 without the complexities of funplug.

Funplug looks like fun but I really need time to play with it before putting it into 'production'.

Re: change samba configuration file

Well to change the samba server settings, you need to edit the /etc/samba/smb.conf file.

You will need command line access to your DNS-323 to edit that file.  Funplug is the
easiest (IMHO) way to get telnet (or ssh) access to your DNS-323.  You don't need to
use all the services that funplug provides, if that seems to complicated.  By default,
funplug just enables a telnet server for root access with no password.  That should be
enough to get access to the smb.conf file.

One thing to note about the DNS-323 startup of samba.  The smb.conf file is recreated
at each reboot from some data stored in NVRAM.  So, the easiest way (IMHO) to run with
your 'custom' smb.conf,  is to let the DNS-323 boot up normal, then (using a start-up script
in funplug) copy your customized smb.conf file over the standard one and restart the samba
server.

You just need to remember that any changes you make with the web GUI, need to be
copied to your custom smb.conf file, or you will loose them at the next reboot.  And, depending
on the extent of the customizations of the smb.conf file, the web GUI [samba section] may
not function as intended.  I think the best approach for custom smb.conf is to not use the samba
section of the web GUI, and do all the necessary changes via the command line.

You may find some users describing a technique to modify the smb.conf file by editing the file
generated by the 'Save Configuration' function in the web GUI, then restoring the edited configuration file.
I would advise against this approach because it writes directly to NVRAM, any mistake and you
can cause your DNS-323 restart improperly.

Re: change samba configuration file

Thank you for your reply and the advice...

My only problem with fun_plug was the intermittenet telnet access and difficulties confirming that NFS was actually functioning.  I'm a newbie so -- so much new tech to learn in linux generally and the DNS-323 in particular.
