DNS323...wierd samba behaviour

Hi,

I use my DNS-323 as a movie storage and watch movies via XBOX or PS3. For PS3 I have installed Mediatomb. Also I have Transmission client installed to download torrents. Recently I have noticed that  opening a movie folder under Volume_1 "Transmission" folder (the one which torrent downloads are stored) takes extremely long time...say 3-4 minutes!! All other folders from Volume_1 and Volume_2 are opening instantly. I have disabled mediatomb and Transmission and still the same.

DNS-323 firmware has been upgraded to 1.08 but still the same problem is occurring.

What can be with "Transmission"  folder? With TOP printout I can see that smbd is occupied and using cpu time a lot. If I restart samba with  "smb restart" the folder is "released" and  available immediately so it looks like something is jamming with Samba...

Any idea?

Re: DNS323...wierd samba behaviour

I figured it out myself. Under Transmission folder there were a  huge 7.2Gig  .RAR file which must have disturbed the samba. Once I copied this rar file somewhere else, the delay disappeared. I guess Samba keeps some kind of index of what is inside the folder...Indexing this rar file just took  long time. I don't really know,  just a wild guess.

If anyone has better understanding, please share it with us

Mark
