Partitioning to make raid drives

Hello,

Just got the 321 and have 2x1tb   harddrives coming in the mail.  Before I set it up I wanted to know if this is possible.

I have some valuable data for which I wand the redundancy of RAID 1. I also have unvaluable video files for which I would want the speed and size of RAID 0.

Is it possible to partition each drive into 500 Gb partitions,  use one partition for each drive to make a 500GB RAID 1 drive for my valuable information; and use a partition from each drive to make a 1TB RAID 0 partition for my videos?

Or is there a better way to do this?
thanks,
Andy

Re: Partitioning to make raid drives

No - as shipped the unit allows you to have a RAID0 OR a RAID1 partition but not both.  Theoretically you can manually configure it the way you want, but to do this you will need to hack the unit to add a telnet client and then create your own partitions and arrays.  If you create a RAID volume that is less than the available space, the unit will create a JBOD (linear) volume that utilizes the remaining space.

Whilst I'm about it - two points ...

- you say ...

I have some valuable data for which I wand the redundancy of RAID 1

I want to [b]emphasize[/i] that RAID1 is NOT a form of backup, the redundancy it provides allows for uninterrupted access to the data, you will still need to back it up, if it is of value to you.

- you also say ...

I also have unvaluable video files for which I would want the speed and size of RAID 0

RAID0 only provides a performance enhancement if the disk drive is the bottleneck, with a NAS server, it may not be, and this NAS server is no exception, in my experience a RAID0 configuration is no faster than any of the others, so you might as well just create the standard RAID1 and JBOD.
