Vista machine keeps the drives spinning

I have Vista Laptop which has a .bat file with the following in it (as I kept losing my drive mapping):

@echo
net use X: /DELETE
net use Y: /DELETE

net use X: \\192.168.1.2\Volume_1
net use Y: \\192.168.1.2\Volume_2

Volume_1 & 2 are the DNS323 disks. Whenever this laptop is ON and a user logged on (and so the .bat file executed) my DNS323 disks never stop spinning. However, I also have an XP laptop which just has the normal 'mapped' network drives and this does not keep them spinning (assuming the Vista laptop is either logged off or turned off)

Is their another way of 'mapping' drives in Vista which will not keep the drives spinning?

Thanks in advance

Re: Vista machine keeps the drives spinning

I have the same problem.

It's not the DNS or Samba per se - as I have the same Samba shares open from a linux server, and the disks spin down.

So Vista must be accessing something on the share at least every 5 minutes.

Anyone???

I'm going to start investigating, I'll keep you posted.

Re: Vista machine keeps the drives spinning

wortselsoft - that's a really good find. But I checked, and I had offline files disabled.

BUT (how embarrasing) I'm pretty sure it was the DNS323 Gadget (http://philwigglesworth.net/BlogEngine. … adget.aspx). I've turned off the Gadget, and hey presto, disks spin down.
